"Their increase has been considerably less than inflation."
Since it is a percentage charged and not a flat fee, it keeps up with inflation. I have had +8,000 transactions on Ebay and the cost of doing business with them has gone up.

I wouldn't say eBay is trying to "muscle back" into the payment territory.? What they have done is provide a seamless means, for both buyers and sellers, to use a vast array of payment methods, including using PayPal.? As a buyer whether on eBay or anywhere else, I like PayPal.? As a seller, I don't know how somebody pays (although I suspect many or most use PayPal).? And I do NOT have to set up to directly handle credit card payments, Apple pay, or anything else.? eBay is my only point of contact for receiving payments which is much more streamlined.? As a seller, I am not charged a separate PayPal fee or any other fee directly for any form of payment.? This (and whatever fees are involved with other payment methods) is now just rolled into the total eBay final value fee.
Incidentally, when the managed payment scheme started (October 28, 2020) the eBay fee was 12.35% for most items (up to $7500).? This "final value" fee including eBay and payment fees all combined.? It is now 13.25%. Their increase has been considerably less than inflation.? eBay gets pounded on a lot for their fees, but a reality check is to see what typical auction and consignment fees are.? Of course, an auction house will do the photography and promotion for you, but you certainly pay for the service.
Also, after some fits and starts, eBay finally smoothed out the handling of state sales tax (now required with online sales due to a court decision.)? It was a real nightmare at first when sellers had to be far more involved in that quagmire.

As a buyer, what I like about PayPal is that they will go to bat for me if the seller doesn't respond to an issue; PayPal's entire business model involves keeping me happy, especially by protecting my credit card info, so I will continue to use them and pay the fee. EBay's business is facilitating transactions, and yes this includes protecting credit card info; but it is not the one and only reason for their existence as it is for PayPal. It looks like eBay is trying to muscle back into the payment territory it left to PayPal when it was spun out.
Can't comment as a seller. I tend to use Facebook groups specific to whatever the sale item is and where many of the buyers are geographically close by, so we can meet in person somewhere (coffee shop), the buyer can evaluate the goods, and pay if he likes them.?
