Re: Train Related?

Definitely not a lathe to pop out on the kitchen table on a winter evening. ?I hope he didn¡¯t cut the bed out from a running line one dark night! ?I¡¯m sure it¡¯s very rigid but 120lbs to the yard flat-bottom rail is designed to flex, albeit under a hundred tons of locomotive. ? And yes, model train hobbyists have as much need for precision miniature machine tools as clocksmiths and many other hobbyists. ?Mine is used for turning non-functional model details, functional items such as working buffer heads, making jigs and tools, aligning mechanisms, drilling frames, track gauge jigs etc. ?I recently bought a form tool for making wheels to a particular standard profile, though I have a way to go before I turn out my own useable wheels. ?Nevertheless the purchase was made with a particular pair of yet-to-be-scratchbuilt locomotives in mind for which no ready made wheels are currently available. ?There are also techniques for correcting faults on readymade wheels and bearings using the lathe itself and purpose-made collets. ?So yes once you get a bit beyond your basic trainset box, machine tools become very relevant to our?particular?model railway fantasy world!

it looks like photos of three lathes in all,?

lathes are used in hobby trains for making logs that fit into the cars, barrels, and even making replacement wheels and axels
I have a ton of train stuff from my grandfather and some of the notes talk about using a little lathe for stuff like that
