so made my first pen on my little unimat, I still need to get

so here is the problems I faced

1) the fitting is to tight with this setup, do to the size of
things (chuck and the live center) there is no room to place the
work pieces on,
the gap that I could get with using the 3-jaw chuck could not
even fit the brass nob to get that on
my thought on fixing this is to make the pen mandrill its own
little mount thing if my measurements are right I can save about
15mm?
not a ton of space, but with that and taking off the live center
I think that gives me the room to put stuff on without removing
the tailstock in full
2) the ways got a ton of sawdust and chips on them during this,
what are peoples thoughts on ways cover cloths and adding them
to the unimat?
3) dont know if people have an idea on this, but with the insert
tools about how long does a insert? last? or is it one of those
things thats hard to pin down do to quality of inserts?
