Hi
Pat:
As a
tool maker we used special center punches called Transfer
Punches:
Very
handy, never hit them hard, just enough to leave a prick. Then
I use my 3/4" diameter center punch to enlarge it to a 1/4"
crater.
Being
a nerd, I just had to have more than one set, so I have
fractions to 1/2", 1-60 numbers and metric. I don't have the
0.5" to 1" set, yet.
Carl.

So here is how I would do the finish and holes, thread the center
with the proper relief. ?Thread it on the spindle, face it square
and to fit the chuck recess. ? Put it in the recess then Using a
center punch through the chuck locate the first hole, drill and
tap it, install one screw, then using a drill bit that just fits
inside the threads drill starter holes, remove and finish. ? My
chucks that have facing plates have an index recess. ??
