Sorry for the late reply, but I am the member who posted the photo of the "custom threading arbor". It's simply a modified grinding wheel arbor, modified to fit un-modified standard threading patterns, and it goes on the pulley end of the spindle, in place of the nut, which is what I assume Jan meant.

To use it, one has to shift the whole attachment towards the HS so the follower can reach the pattern. This is OK for projects where the threading is being done near the HS end of the workpiece, which is probably the majority of cases. There is a problem with interference between the main threading attachment shaft and the large pulley, which I solved by the simple expedient of replacing the standard pulley with the smaller WW spindle pulley. I plan a long-term solution of making an extension to the main shaft that has a shallow cut-out for the pulley. The extension will also allow threading anywhere along the bed. The beauty of this system is that you can put on or change a pattern without either having to disassemble the chuck or lose register for your work. Meaning, for instance, that you could cut different pitch threads on the same workpiece w/o taking it out of the 3-jaw. Not having to install the patterns behind the chuck also means one can use later Emco chucks, or Sherline or others w/o the removable backplate. I believe these are the reasons Emco switched to the same type system on the Unimat 3 (before changing to the hand-cranked change-gear system). Martin -----Original Message-----

I think I will give a try at both solutions, turning a Unimat style pattern and making up a Mert type guide. Can't have too many attachments for a lathe. While doodling up the adapter and plugs for Mert's threading guide I had the thought that it might be possible to make up a set of guides all with the same OD that screw onto the spindle end. Makes cutting the followers a bit more of a challenge, but thats why I do this. Art, thanks for the references. Just the discussion I was looking for.
