It's Finally Happened! Precision Mapping Reg Server Shutdown !!
I went to activate yet another Precision Mapping 9.0 install for a rebuild of my APRS UI-Webserver setup (moving the whole setup to an SSD) and was greeted by this message at
<> *Notice: The Registration Services provided through this site were terminated March 1, 2020. * I.e. it is now NOT POSSIBLE to activate Precision Mapping in the normal way. ?? However there are work-arounds. 1)?? If you only want to use Precision Mapping 9 with UIview and the PMap 9 Server plugin (i.e. not use the program stand-alone outside of UIview 32),? you don't need to do anything.?? Even the "un-activated" Precision Mapping database will? work inside UIview.? Install Precision Mapping the usual way, but ignore the prompt to register the program the first time it is run.? You can then run the PMap Data with UIview indefinitely. 2) The Windows Registry is the vast and inscrutable database that contains information about everything ever added to the Windows system.? It includes data and user preferences for every program on the system. It contains data and user settings about every piece of hardware installed on the system and far more. ? You see tiny excerpts of the Registry displayed to the user when you use the Windows Device Manager,? Windows Scheduler, Sound Controls, etc. Everytime, you install a program that requires a registration key or activation code, almost always the "magic numbers" you enter into the program are stashed away in the the Registry. [A rare exception is UIview when you complete the setup by entering your callsign, name and registration code during the first-time setup. UIview stores this info in the file "UIreg.bin" located in the program's own folder, rather than in the registry.? However, the vast majority of Windows programs stash this kind of license data in the registry, often in encrypted format.] For Precision Mapping 9.0, add the following lines to the Windows Registry: ?? Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 ?? [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\CtrlSoftM7] ?? "CLSID1309P"="" Open a basic text editor like Windows Notepad or similar.??? Copy/paste the lines above into it.? Save the file as something like "Pmap9.reg" .?? Be sure the file name does NOT have the normal extension .TXT. ? and? ensure the file is saved in basic raw text format; i.e. not as a Word document or similar. ?? .REG files are basic text files, but have the "magical" property of being treated differently by Windows. ? Double-clicking a file ending in .TXT normally makes it open in Notepad or WordPad. Double-clicking a .REG file causes Windows to try to add it to the Windows Registry.? It will only process the entry, if it meets the exact structure shown above. From the Windows File Explorer,? RIGHT-click the file, and choose "Merge...". ? This reads the file entries into the Windows Registry. Each time you start the stand-alone Precision Mapping, it will prompt to register. Dismiss the prompt and continue with the program.? This will happen indefinitely. This workaround works on all flavors of Windows from Windows 2000 to the latest Win 10. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** |

They all appear to be victims of the explosion of smartphone-based on-line mapping (Google Maps, Microsoft Bing/Expedia, MapQuest. etc).? People seem to foolishly assume that cellular data has 100% coverage (which it isn't). Further, people seem to be willing to absorb the costs of endlessly downloading map images on expensive cellular data plans. The loss of these products, which would provide full-zoomable scalable street-level maps of ALL of North America WITHOUT an Internet connection is a major blow to APRS operations in the field.? There are vast areas of the US and Canada that DO NOT HAVE cellular data coverage or Internet access. The disappearance of these CD/DVD-based off-line products has killed several APRS applications: -? The death of MapPoint in 2013 killed APRSpoint, and the UIpoint plug-in for UIview. -? The death of Street Atlas Classic? killed APRSplus. -? The death of Precision Mapping has crippled UIview. 2)?? It would be completely useless to upload old Precision Mapping CD/DVD? ISOs to an FTP server.?? You cold download and install them, but THEY WON'T RUN until they are "activated". Activating them depends on receiving an "unlock code" by registering them on the Undertow "RegisterMyApp" server which no longer exists. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen H. When I started with UI-View way back when, I used Street Atlas 5.0 and made up all of the maps I would need. Since then, I have painstakingly made sure that I still have copies of those maps. Roger made a great program but like someone said here, it is an orphan with no one to step up and continue his work. I would love to upgrade to something easy (what is easy?) and install something new. The latest Street Atlas I have is from 2014. Anyway, that's my $0.02 for this thread. I have not used UI-View for a couple years or more due to not being able to get my Precision Map 8.0 to work on a new notebook when mine failed; think I ran into registration problems. UI-View was my favorite APRS program as it supported messaging very well for me which I have the most fun doing.

I was going to look into using . It used a program called Taho.exe to make maps. What I did not know was if tiles would be generated and saved on your PC like other Programs out there do so you do not have to be on the internet all the time to use your stored files. Using tiles the OSM maps other APRS programs use are scalable. So does Taho generate just static maps only was my question way back then???? I expected not and why I did not try using Taho. Just thought I would throw this in incase it does provide stored tiles on your PC and supports scaling. Jerry N7YGE -----Original Message-----

So Stephen,The majority of APRS software uses simple fixed? non-zooming non-scrolling bitmaps (i.e. fixed grids of pixels a.k.a. "pictures of maps") when used off-line.? To cover any significant area at a variety of magnifications (i.e. street level, city level, county level, state level, regional, national, etc, you have to store THOUSANDS? of overlapping pictures? at different resolutions. The fluid freely zoom-able, scroll-able views we have become accustomed to with MapPoint, Precision Mapping, Google Maps, Bing Maps, etc? are VECTOR-based image systems that store millions of coordinate pairs that represent the beginning & end of each street segment in a database.? These coordinates are used to draw line segments on-the-fly, as one scrolls and/or zooms over the map.? This is a process similar to stretching out a line in a CAD program, Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw.? The process is repeated thousands of times to draw all the street segments in the current view. All the streets in North America can be represented in about 1.5-2.5 GB of vector data. Storing the same area as fixed pixel grids (the equivalent of photos of maps) at say a dozen zoom levels from city streets to continental takes TERAbytes of data. Many programs let you view zoomable maps when connected to the Internet courtesy of Google Maps, Microsoft Bing or MapQuest. But when you save maps for off-line use, you are making? fixed a screen cap of the current view. The only current APRS program I am aware of that can do efficient vector-based off-line mapping is YAAC.? This program uses the Open Street Maps? database. ?? Most programs that use Open Streets data do so in the form of static bitmaps. ? For off-line use,? YAAC allows you to download as much or a little of the Open Streets database reformatted by the author into a scalable? vector format. ?? He has also cleaned up the awful default graphics of Open Streets; i.e. all route shields are the same "pill-capsule" outline that makes it impossible to tell the difference between an Interstate, an in-town Interstate business route, an old US highway, or a state route.?? YAAC's rendition of Open Street's data properly shows the red-white-and blue Interstate shield, the green business route shield, the black&white US highway shield, etc. ?? The one major disadvantage of YAAC is that it is written in Java, requiring you to install the hopelessly security-challenged Oracle Java runtime to use it on Windows.? At the same time, this is also an advantage -- the identical program can run on MacOS or various Linux flavors if their Java runtime is installed. Also is there any mapping software that will work with UI_View, again without the InternetNO.? We were privileged in North America, having the Precision Mapping Server plug-in and Precision Mapping.? The rest of the world has to put up with exclusively static fixed maps in UIview.?? However, Precision Mapping 9.0 is floating around the Internet on the Bit Torrent file sharing networks. As I pointed out in the first post of this thread, it can be made to work, even without Undertow's activation server. 73,------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen H. Thanks Stephen for a work around. I started UI-View on my desktop just in time for the local weather coming through SC tonight and in the morning. Pleased to hear the siren as the watches are posted in Georgia and SC!!! It works!!!! Love this program and thanks to Roger for writing it I I first used UI-View one week after his death. I remember the tribute in the ocean in his honor I've tried other programs but I keep coming back to this one. It has so much flexibility and the last detail maps are not needed for my uses. Thanks again to Stephen for keeping his pages alive on APRS and UI-View. Lastly I would be remiss if I didnt mention and honor the Father of APRS Bob W4APR, the day I found APRS-DOS. I was hooked!!!!
