What are you trying to do with overlays?

There are two completely different things called "overlays" in UIview:

? -? The ones native to UIview that are loaded with "Action", "Overlays..."
???? These are exactly like APRS objects, except that they show ONLY on your
own map and no-one else's.? They are point objects that show on top of the map,
and work with any kind of map in UIview.? They are produced by making a simple
text file placed in the \OVERLAYS folder under the main UIview folder.

Here is an example.?? This one makes several ham fest locations and repeaters
around the state of Michigan appear on any map of the area. It also makes the
old and new? locations of the Dayton Hamvention appear on maps that cover that
area.? The format is exactly the same as for an over-the-air APRS object,
except that they never leave your own computer.

? -? Then there are two kinds that only work with the Precision Mapping Server
for Uview.? (The functions are built-into the Pmap Server rather than UIview
itself.)??????? "UNDERlays" are bitmap pictures (usually aerial photos, scans
of topo maps, or weather radar images) that cover an area rather than a single
point.? They appear UNDER the roads on the base Precision Mapping map.??????
Then there are "OVERlays". These are CAD drawing objects that let you add
points of interest or missing roads to maps.? Or highlight things like parade
and marathon routes, outline search areas, etc ON TOP OF the base Precision
Mapping map.?? You can load more than one layer of these markups on top of the
base map at the same time. ?? This is similar to the multiple layers in vector
drawing programs like AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, ArcView, etc.

How long does it take to get a registration?

A friend of mine KM6UWM has been waiting all Week for a registration to be issued to him.

Every time he returns to the site he see's this message,

"Hi Benjamin Orchard

Your request is waiting to be processed, please try later"

As a former registrar for this software I am appalled that this process now takes so long!

So how long should he wait??

File - Posting guidelines

The UI-View Group is very active. Most already do so,
but here are some some guidelines to follow.

1. Civility... this is practiced well by our members!

2. Sign your messages with your name and callsign.

3. Only post messages and responses that are relevant to UI-View.

4. Use plain text for messages sent to the UI-View support list.
When you address some 5000 recipients, you cannot know what their
email readers do with HTML formatted messages. Some will experience
unreadability.

5. IMPORTANT: When replying to a posting (message), kindly delete
all unnecessary text including the trailing text. Only leave the
poster's name, callsign and the time stamp, and the text from
the prior message about which you are commenting, and then trim
the rest. When viewing messages in the Yahoo web based interface,
the command [Up Thread] at the top of the message can be used, and
many email clients can group messages by thread also. Some members
have slow connections or pay for bandwidth. Brevity can often
also improve the clarity of your message. Do not top post... i.e.
do not type your reply above the quoted text.

6. When replying to a post, please decide if your comment should
go to the entire group of about 5000 or directly to the author.
Please think before replying to the group... replies like "I sure
do agree with that" do not add much to the group. Send thoughts
like those directly to the poster please.

7. Postings of sale or swapping of items are not wanted.

8. New members are all moderated for a number of postings. If the
messages follow the guidelines, they are approved and the member
is changed to un-moderated status.

This is a partially moderated list, i.e., only the user's first
messages are moderated, but all messages are monitored after posting.
If an un-moderated posting is found by the moderators to have a
problem, then the poster is changed to moderated status and in
most cases also contacted directly to resolve whatever has caused
the problem.

Actions are taken against those that chronically violate the rules.
The reason for this form of moderation is to block spammers from the
list and it is working well.

9. Do not add disclaimers to your posts that (1) restrict the ability
of other members to use the information you post, (2) claim a copyright
to your post, or (3) to claim any type of "rights" as a consequence of
another member replying to your post either directly to you or to the group.

10. Do not use anti-spam tools like challenge/response; the moderators
will not respond, and since messages to you then will bounce, you most
probably will be removed as a user of the group.

File - About Bouncing (Admin message)

This message is sent to all new members, and to all members
every now and then. It has been revised as bounce reports have
changed a bit.

Any of us could experience no longer receiving email from the
UI-View support list. You might want to print this message and
review it if you stop receiving messages from the UI-View list.

If you stop receiving messages from the UI-View list, suspect
that either...

1) this or some other Yahoo group that you are a member of is
sending email which some spamblocker system regard as spam or
junk mail (quite a lot of these reports since summer 2009).

2) it may be that your email account has filled up with unread
messages or that the account on your mail server has ran out of
storage space. Read or delete the old messages on your mail server.

3) Some MSN or Hotmail accounts, and others such as arrl.net,
qsl.net which are used as a forwarding address from time to time
cannot forward to your primary address. When this hapens, the
Yahoo group receives an error message with something like
"impossible to relay to xxx" and you are then in the "bounced"
list. There are increasing numbers of bounces from some service
providers about messages which are blocked by them for policy
reasons.

4) You or your email provider have set up a challenge-and-response
system for those sending e-mail to you. The moderators will not
send replies to such challenges. You should select another
address for your list membership(s).

Sorry, but we cannot investigate every one of these blockings.
Please be aware that if you haven't received list messages
for some days, and reactivation requests are not reaching
you, or not answered by you, your account at the UI-View
list may be deleted. It may deleted if several bounces occur
in less than a week or two. It will also be deleted if the
bounce report says that your address is invalid, discontinued,
or unknown. Be aware that the bounce can relate to messages
from other lists than the UI-View list if you are a member
of other Yahoo groups.

If your membership is deleted, you will not be able to log
into the Yahoo group. If you try and send email to the group,
it will be rejected. However, you can subscribe again with a
valid and working email account by sending an empty email to
ui-view-subscribe@....

If you are away for some time, you might want to set your
account to temporarily receive only special messages or
even no email at all, but we recommend that still receive
special messages. You can log into the Yahoo group when you
return and change it back to daily digest or normal email.

Note: A member may send reactivation requests to himself/herself
from the Email Preferences section of My Groups.

73 and good luck - your UI-View group moderators

SpotMeNow

Long ago I created a primitive website SpotMeNow .

I recently brought it back to life and it occurred to me that others might be interested in being added to the list.

It is only for vehicles, i.e. moving things, and not for fixed objects.

If too many are interested ill be in trouble as updating it is rather awkward. We will see.

More 60-Meters APRS Tests and Annual Summer Road Trip

On Wednesday 25 July 2018, I will be departing for my annual road trip to the
Colorado Rockies for the Evergreen Jazz Festival <> .
The trip out there (1100 miles/1750 Km) takes two days of non-stop driving.

The first day (Wednesday) ends in Des Moines, Iowa about 500 miles/800Km out.?
I will be beaconing on 60 meters with both standard 300 baud AX.25 and APRS
Messengert MFSK16.??? On the second day, which starts in Des Moines and ends in
the Denver, Colorado area, I will switch to the normal 30-meters HF APRS, since
I will presumably be too far from the home QTH (East Lansing, Michigan)
60-meter igate to hear me.? I will remain on 30 meters until the last day of
the return trip (Des Moines-->Home) where I will again start operating on 60
meters. The final day is tentatively on 1 August.

I am carrying two monoband HamSticks, one for 30 meters and one for 60
meters.?? The mobile installation has a Kenwood D700 VHF/UHF with full mobile
laptop mapping and two-way messaging, and two HF rigs. A Yaesu FT-891 is
dedicated to the 30M & 60M HF APRS? operation.? General HF operation on 40M
through 6M (including my "Mobile SSTV LiveCAM") will be on a Yaesu FT-857.

At home,? UIview mapping webservers/igates are operating simultaneously on 30 &
60 meters.? As usual, go to

???? <>

which takes you to my APRS webserver gateway page.? Click on the cyan button
for the normal 30-meters mapping server that shows everything I am hearing
off-the-air at home in real time.? Click on the black "Special Events
Webserver" button for the special 60-meters mapping server. ? ? The 30-meter
receiving system is using my homebrew mag loop and an FT-891. The 60-meter
receiver is using a 105' dipole center-fed with ladder line and an FT-857.???
All servers are up and running now, even through the departure is a couple of
days away. Anyone else that wants to try beaconing on 60 meters (and maybe
being seen on my webserver, findu.com or APRS.fi) is welcome to try.

Details on the receive frequencies, tones, etc for 60 meters is on the 60-meter
server page, along with a route map of the 60-meter portion of the trip.

The calls/SSIDs for the various bands are:

-? WA8LMF (no SSID)? -? Normal 144.39 2M APRS

-? WA8LMF-2?? -? 30-meters AX.25 packet APRS
-? WA8LMF-63 -? 30-meters MFSK16 or PSK63 APRS generated by APRS Messenger

-? WA8LMF-6 ? -? 60-meters AX.25 packet APRS
-? WA8LMF-66 -? 60-meters MFSK16 or PSK63 APRS generated by APRS Messenger

All frequencies are routed into my Panasonic CF-51 Toughbook mobile laptop via
multiple homebrew soundcard interfaces, and are capable of full two-way messaging.

URL Typo Fixed Another 60 Meters APRS Test This Week: Tuesday 26 June - Thursday28 June

After the screwup last weekend due to a flakey driver for the uBlox GPS I was
using, I am trying 60 meters APRS again this week.

Starting Tuesday 26 June, I am driving from central Michigan to Rice Lake,
Wisconsin, a total distance of about 650 miles (about 1040 Km) on the road, but
about 400 miles (640 Km)? as the crow flies.? This should be a nice test of the
NVIS range of 60 meters; i.e. 0-300-to-400 miles or so.? The departure will be
about 0800 EDT, with the arrival at about 2030 to 2130 EDT (local is 1930-2030
CDT).? This means the extended twilight propagation should be kicking in as I
approach the destination.

Wednesday will be just driving around the local area -- not much beaconing.

The return trip, on Thursday, will have the twilight propagation developing as
I get back near home.

My _Special Events UI-Webserver_ will be tracking whatever can be heard from my
home station TS-2000 and 105' ladder-line-fed dipole.? Go to

??? <>

and click on the black "Special Events Server" button.

As before, I will be operating on *5403.50 Khz USB* (US "channel 5") with
*300**-baud **AX.25* on 1600/1800 Hz tone pair (i.e. standard KAM/TNC2 tones
for HF), and on APRS Messenger *APRS-over**-MFSK16* on 2100 Hz center tone.

Calls will be

*WA8LMF-6??? (AX.25)
WA8LMF-66? (MFSK16)*

I will also be beaconing the usual 2M 144.39 APRS as just plain WA8LMF with no
SSID.

The map below shows the outbound itinerary. The return trip may be through
Madison-Milwaukee-Chicago instead; i.e. around the "bottom" of Lake Michigan
instead of "over the top".

The registration number and APRS validation number will both be the same as before if you have the same call sign. If you have them, enter them and you are up and running. If you don¡¯t, just go to the registration page and get them again.
