Except for the scalable, zoom-able vector-based maps created by the PMap Server plugin for UIview, all maps used by UIview are fixed grids of pixels - so many pixels wide by so many pixels tall. ? These images are NOT resized or re-scaled by either UIview or the display drivers in Windows.? The map images are pushed into the display one image pixel to one screen pixel. Depending on the resolution of your computer display, these fixed pixel grids may not fill the screen, may exactly fit, or may overflow the screen forcing you to scroll to see all of the map.

Fox example, if you have a SVGA-sized map image (800x600 pixels) and display it on a modern 1920x1080 full-HD resolution monitor, it will not fill the entire screen if the UIview program window is maximized. ? Note that this has nothing to do with the inch size of the monitor - it's the resolution of the display in pixels relative to the pixel dimensions of the map image that matters.

Another issue related to map display is the ASPECT RATIO (ratio of height to width in an image or display). ? i.e. the SHAPE of the inage. ?? Many map images for UIview are formatted for the 4:3 ratio of classic analog TV broadcasting and early VGA / SVGA / /XGA computer monitors.? Most computer displays in use today are essentially flat-panel TVs without the tuner - they have the 16:9 aspect ratio characteristic of digital TV broadcasting, and a resolution of either 1280x720 (half-HD a.k.a."720p") or 1920x1080 (a.k.a. "full-HD")? pixels..

When you say "they only encompass a small section of my screen", is it possible you are using a "4K" or :"quad-HD" (3840x2160 pixel) TV as a computer display?? If so, even maps scaled for 1920x1080 systems will appear? undersized.

Again, maps created by Precision Mapping and the PMap Server plug-in for UIview are scalable vector images have no fixed grid of pixels or fixed area of coverage.. They will expand or contract to fill any sized display area. And have an infinite area to scroll to either up-and-down or side-to-side.? I.e. they act like the infinitely-zoomable maps you expect online like Google Maps that can zoom anywhere from street-level to continental or anywhere in between.

Both the Pmap Server plugin for UIview, and the Precision Mapping 9.0 application required to provide the database for UIview are included on the flash drive.? Once installed, you have a seamless street-level map of all of North America that does NOT require an Internet connection.? It's all in about 1.5GB of your hard disk.

Re: NEED SOME HELP..IS ANYONE THERE?

Robert, VA3ROM

You can write a simple batch file that sits in the the directory where your currdat.lst file is written by WUHU and when it`s written you simply rename it to the .txt file that UI-VIEW32 requires.

But not everyone can program, so you can also register with CWOP and then you put the CWOP login data into WUHU and it will upload that to the various CWOP filtered servers and your APRS weather station will come back down to you via the APRS-IS and display on UI-VIEW32, APRS.FI, etc.

If you click the WUHU Setup tab you will see the various tab weather services that you can stream your weather data to. I also stream to the Weather Underground site and you can join that service directly from WUHU. So your weather data also shows up on the Weather Underground web site (non-APRS). The thing here is that Weather Underground archives your weather data and I`ve been able to go back to records from day 1 for analysis and graphing or exporting your data for use with Excel. But the site has some great online tools you can use that does the heavy work for non-programmers.

Hope this helps.

Re: Filter question

Robert, VA3ROM

Besides using a 14580 filter port, if you don`t want internet stations then don`t connect to the APRS-IS (internet). Tell UI-VIEW that you are radio only.

Re: Filter question

Robert, VA3ROM

This is the link for the current filter guide

I would start with "m/300" so only APRS stations, objects, mobiles, et al within a 300 mi (or is it km) appear on your UIVIEW map being used. This will take a lot of strain off the APRS-IS and your system instead of streaming the entire APRS world into your computer! You can use compound filters to narrow down your focus of interest. Mobiles only etc.

Hi Stephen,
Well your HF Igate still works fine. It copies my station here in Arkansas all day. China is having severe power outages due to all the coal miners having Covid. Hopefully that station will lose power and just go away.

That's the "rush hour" track on the CD.? It was recorded off-the-air on 144.39 from my QTH (at the time) in Pasadena. It was a capture during the Southern Cal rush hour (which extends from about 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM!? This capture was about 4:30--5:30) reflecting the worst imaginable APRS traffic in existence, with almost constant multiple transmissions on top of each other, wildly over- and under- deviated stations, idiots with CW IDs in the middle of the chaos, etc.

You hear traffic being digipeated by 4 mountain-top digis at 4,000 feet+ elevation ringing the greater LA basin simultaneously. Frequently, two or three of the digis would each digipeat DIFFERENT stations at the same time, depending on which mobiles on the ground were nearest which digis. Note that in southern Cal, most of the time, mobiles have a true? low-loss? line-of-sight path to one or more digis, even when they were 40-50 miles away! [Most of the population of 18 million+? of greater LA is below 500-800 feet elevation, while the digis are up 4000 feet or more in the mountains ringing the greater LA area.]

[People in the flat-lands east of the Mississippi just can't imagine the APRS anarchy that extends for over 150 miles up and down the SoCal coast due to digis at multiple THOUSANDS of feet elevation.? Conversely, I have always laughed when newly-minted hams in SoCal get accustomed to hand-helds routinely working voice repeaters from 50 miles away. Then they go on trips to the Midwest or Florida,? and can't understand why they can't reach the edge of town with their $1.98 handhelds! ]

Then to make the rush-hour even worse, I edited out any dead air of more than 5 seconds (rare in that mess) with an audio editor. The idea was to provide the worst-case challenge to TNCs with under-sized buffers such as the Kenwood D700 mobile and TH-D7 handheld.

Before, this guy had only been playing the track of my solo drive test on a quiet (non-144.39) channel. The intent of this track was to challenge TNCs with a signal fluctuating between strong-signal full-quieting? and periodic loss of quieting/mobile flutter as I drove into and out of strong signal areas.? The receive/record location was at my house in Pasadena, as I drove a 25-mile loop around the San Gabriel Valley, beaconing with a D700.? The receive audio was taken off the 6-pin mini-DIN port of a Yaesu FT-1500.

China Has Hijacked WA8LMF.com !!

For about a week now, looking up WA8LMF on findu.com or aprs.fi?? has yielded a map showing my location as being in Los Angeles.? (Rather than my current location in Haslett in central Michigan.)

This is due to the igate? BG0GE-6 in Xi'an China constantly igating a playback of the APRS Test CD I created over 16 years ago.? This CD was intended for direct audio playback into TNCs for testing; not for over-the-air transmission. One of the tracks on the CD is a recording of me, off-the-air, doing a 20-mile drive test around the San Gabriel Valley east of Los Angeles.

This recording, for reasons unknown, is now being played back constantly into the APRS Internet System via the
BG0GE-6 igate, constantly over-writing my current position reports from here in Michigan.

The fake APRS drive test being endlessly repeated on the Internet!

After considerable search, I located an email address for
BG0GE? <bg0ge@...> and sent him an email asking him to please stop this igating.?? I have received no response back.

My website is WA8LMF.net .? Today, I discovered that?? WA8LMF.COM? (a domain I haven't used for many years) is now a Chinese porn site!!

I have now configured a copy of UIview to beacon into the Internet (not over the air) my current location every 60 seconds.? This includes the comment "BG0GE-6 Igate In China Disrupting My Posit!" .? Hoping they will get the message.....

This is wierd !!!

APRS Ghost From The Past

When I made my usual morning check of my UI-webserver mapping displays at

<>

I was startled to see my mobile (WA8LMF - no SSID) in Los Angeles instead of here in the East Lansing area of central Michigan.

Checking APRS.fi. I found a track I drove in 2005 around Los Angeles' San Gabriel Valley to create track 4 of my TNC Test CD! (The TNC Test CD image is downloadable from my website.)

<>

Further investigation found this was passed into the APRS-IS by a station in China *BG0GE-6 <!call=a%2FBG0GE-6> .??? BGF0GE *appears to be an igate in Xi'an, China - home of the famous Terracotta Warriors.

Apparently, he got a copy of my TNC Test CD and played it over the air (or at least into the Internet) instead of audio directly into a TNC under test.

Wierd???? At least it appears that China's "Great Firewall" isn't blocking my website.......

Sort of...?? On any version of Windows after XP, you DO NOT want to install in the default location proposed by the installer. Windows Vista and later very aggressively try to prevent applications from writing? back into the program install location somewhere under the \Program Files folder after applications are installed.

This is a security measure to prevent malware from modifying existing programs after they are installed.??? However, this prevents older programs that try to save user data (settings, .ini files, user preferences, received data, etc) into the program folder from doing so.? (The proper convention for Vista-7-8.x-10-11 is for programs to write post-install data into the folder hierarchy beginning \Users instead.? However, this does nothing for older programs (like UIview) that are un-changeably hard-wired to write back into the program folder.

Further, on 64-bit Windows, 32-bit programs automatically default into installing themselves into a separate folder tree that begins \Program Files (x86)? .

For old programs like UIview that don't know how to "play nice" with UAC (User Account Control), you should override the proposed install location and change it to something completelyh outside the standard Windows locations to something like:? C:\UIview??? or something like: ? C:\OldPrograms\UIview32? .

You CAN essentially "clone" the old installation.?? First do a cold install from the UIview source install file, into a suitable folder. You don't need to register or activate the new install . This creates the necessary hidden references to UIview in the Windows Registry. ? Delete everything in the new new UIview folder after installing.

Then copy the entire contents, including all sub-folders, of your old installation into the new empty new UIview. ? This will, among other things transfer the file? UIREG.BIN? which contains your registration information.? (You want to empty everything in the new folder first, so you don't get constantly nagged that you are trying to overwrite a newer version of many files with an older-dated one.)

Most of the configuration settings and user preferences are stored in the file UIview32.ini .? This file is viewable and editable in a basic text editor like Windows Notepad. ? This file contains references to the location (path) to several of the UIview accessory components (such as UI-NWS.exe, UIcapture, etc). Since UIview is being "reborn" in a different folder path, you have to search UIview.ini for all references to the path on the old machine, and alter them to match the location on the new machine.

FINALLY?? If you are using Precision Mapping 9 with UIview:

It is now impossible to register and activate a new installation of Precision Mapping -- Undertow Software discontinued the product and shut down the activation server several years ago.??? However, you can still make it work with UIview.
???? Install Precision Mapping normally from the DVD or ISO file, run it once and dismiss the prompt to activate, and close the program.?? You will not be able to run the standalone program --BUT--? Precision Mapping's data WILL be accessible inside UIview via the Precision Mapping Server 9.0 plug-in.?? You install and configure the PMap Server 9 plug-in just as before.

You CAN'T just copy an installed Precision Mapping setup from the old machine to the new one; you must go through the install drill to get the all-important hidden settings written into the Windows Registry.????? And note that these tricks only work on PMap 9.0 -- older versions of PMap are impossible to use because they require formal activation and a "magic number" from Undertow Software to use; even with UIview.

Before you install UIview, read my notes on installing & updating UIview on my website at:

Re: FW: uiview wx problem

Thank you for the tips Monty, I know that uiview is installed in the regular program-86 folder and not just in c:/drive - under peak systems.? WUHU creates the (currdat.lst) input file I believe that's needed to run my LaCrosse ws-2812u-it wx station which is the same file I input to Weather Display....tnx..Kerry-WA2NAN

Things to check:

The WXNOW.TXT file should be two lines. The first line is the date and time (local) and the second line should be the APRS weather data. This file should update every minute with a new time (date after midnight), and what ever your weather station is reporting.

From what I see from APRS.FI it appears that the weather data is in the correct format.

Weather Display has the capability do a separate upload to Weather underground. I am not sure what the WUHU heavy weather uploader is, so make sure it is not interfering with the WXNOW.TXT file.

Check your configuration in UI-VIEW under Setup > WX Station setup. Make sure the directory and location for the WXNOW.TXT file is correct. Personally, I have Weather Display put the file in the UI-VIEW root directory and then point the WX Station setup to this directory.

Also make sure your UI-VIEW is installed in its own directory under the C: drive. It should not be installed in the standard windows directory structure.

Hope this helps.
