File - About Bouncing (Admin message)
This message is sent to all new members, and to all members
every now and then. It has been revised as bounce reports have changed a bit. Any of us could experience no longer receiving email from the UI-View support list. You might want to print this message and review it if you stop receiving messages from the UI-View list. If you stop receiving messages from the UI-View list, suspect that either... 1) this or some other Yahoo group that you are a member of is sending email which some spamblocker system regard as spam or junk mail (quite a lot of these reports since summer 2009). 2) it may be that your email account has filled up with unread messages or that the account on your mail server has ran out of storage space. Read or delete the old messages on your mail server. 3) Some MSN or Hotmail accounts, and others such as arrl.net, qsl.net which are used as a forwarding address from time to time cannot forward to your primary address. When this hapens, the Yahoo group receives an error message with something like "impossible to relay to xxx" and you are then in the "bounced" list. There are increasing numbers of bounces from some service providers about messages which are blocked by them for policy reasons. 4) You or your email provider have set up a challenge-and-response system for those sending e-mail to you. The moderators will not send replies to such challenges. You should select another address for your list membership(s). Sorry, but we cannot investigate every one of these blockings. Please be aware that if you haven't received list messages for some days, and reactivation requests are not reaching you, or not answered by you, your account at the UI-View list may be deleted. It may deleted if several bounces occur in less than a week or two. It will also be deleted if the bounce report says that your address is invalid, discontinued, or unknown. Be aware that the bounce can relate to messages from other lists than the UI-View list if you are a member of other Yahoo groups. If your membership is deleted, you will not be able to log into the Yahoo group. If you try and send email to the group, it will be rejected. However, you can subscribe again with a valid and working email account by sending an empty email to ui-view-subscribe@.... If you are away for some time, you might want to set your account to temporarily receive only special messages or even no email at all, but we recommend that still receive special messages. You can log into the Yahoo group when you return and change it back to daily digest or normal email. Note: A member may send reactivation requests to himself/herself from the Email Preferences section of My Groups. 73 and good luck - your UI-View group moderators |

File - Posting guidelines
The UI-View Group is very active. Most already do so,
but here are some some guidelines to follow. 1. Civility... this is practiced well by our members! 2. Sign your messages with your name and callsign. 3. Only post messages and responses that are relevant to UI-View. 4. Use plain text for messages sent to the UI-View support list. When you address some 5000 recipients, you cannot know what their email readers do with HTML formatted messages. Some will experience unreadability. 5. IMPORTANT: When replying to a posting (message), kindly delete all unnecessary text including the trailing text. Only leave the poster's name, callsign and the time stamp, and the text from the prior message about which you are commenting, and then trim the rest. When viewing messages in the Yahoo web based interface, the command [Up Thread] at the top of the message can be used, and many email clients can group messages by thread also. Some members have slow connections or pay for bandwidth. Brevity can often also improve the clarity of your message. Do not top post... i.e. do not type your reply above the quoted text. 6. When replying to a post, please decide if your comment should go to the entire group of about 5000 or directly to the author. Please think before replying to the group... replies like "I sure do agree with that" do not add much to the group. Send thoughts like those directly to the poster please. 7. Postings of sale or swapping of items are not wanted. 8. New members are all moderated for a number of postings. If the messages follow the guidelines, they are approved and the member is changed to un-moderated status. This is a partially moderated list, i.e., only the user's first messages are moderated, but all messages are monitored after posting. If an un-moderated posting is found by the moderators to have a problem, then the poster is changed to moderated status and in most cases also contacted directly to resolve whatever has caused the problem. Actions are taken against those that chronically violate the rules. The reason for this form of moderation is to block spammers from the list and it is working well. 9. Do not add disclaimers to your posts that (1) restrict the ability of other members to use the information you post, (2) claim a copyright to your post, or (3) to claim any type of "rights" as a consequence of another member replying to your post either directly to you or to the group. 10. Do not use anti-spam tools like challenge/response; the moderators will not respond, and since messages to you then will bounce, you most probably will be removed as a user of the group. |

It looks like both UI-View and Google earth use WGS84 as the mapping datum. That saves a step, you don't need to convert between datums.

The KMZ files look like they are binary, therefore unless someone has written some software, that is not easily manipulated. The KML files are an HTML like format but cannot be opened with my browser. An attempt to open them took me straight into google earth. I opened the KML file with a simple text editor and the point coordinates are definitely in there. But they are in decimal degree format, so to use them in a UI-View overlay you will need to convert them to degrees, decimal minutes format. And you will need to edit the UI-View overlay file to include the point name, coordinates and the icon designators. If you are using PMap as your map source, you could draw the route in a Precision Mapping CAD file and then load it as a UI-View overlay with MAP > PmapServer 9 Control Panel > Overlays > Load Overlay. This works well for me on a race course overlay for a local relay run over a course of more than one hundred miles. It takes some time to set up in Precision Mapping, but the end result can be well worth the effort. Google Maps KML to UI View Overlay?
Hi All,
I have searched the forums and I don't know that I can find the answer to this... Is there a way to build a route within Google Maps, export it to a KMZ/KML file and then transfer it to an overlay in UI View? There have been some posts about this, but I'm unclear about the answer. So far, I haven't had any delayed packets. That's not to say that I couldn't, so I would like to preempt the problem by programming the schedule editor. Is the schedule editor capable of restarting the TNC or just UIView? Does restarting at intervals UIView preclude the delayed packet problem? I read through the help file but didn't really see anything that would impact the TNC at all.

I have both Dire Wolf and UZ7HO's Soundmodem installed and running with UI-VIEW32, as well as some other programs. Both work perfectly. Dire Wolf does require a bit more effort to configure since everything is in a configuration file, but the documentation is extremely clear and detailed. For local operations, I haven't been able to see any obvious difference, though the diagnostic messages about received signals are very helpful, or at least interesting. 73s, Alan WA4SCA |

Thanks, everyone, for the info and the reading material. I had the right concept on KISS mode, I just didn't state it very well. The TNC is passive in KISS mode, so I won't worry about any terminal settings for the KPC3+.
I heard about the delayed packet issue and thought that maybe it had been corrected with version 9.1 of the firmware, which is what I am running. Guess not. It sounds like a schedule editor is the way to go. An alternative would be to put a vacation timer on the TNC power supply and shut it off at three in the morning each day. That's kind of a pain because I run the TNC and the radio off the same 12-volt supply. I am running the TNC on a dedicated desktop PC. I am a Flex SDR user and have PCs around the shack for various projects. Actually, some desktops are less expensive than the small netbook computers, especially for refurbished or open box deals. Anyway, I have my I-Gate/Digi up and running. I have been monitoring my raw packets and haven't seen any duplicates. I got into this whole area of amateur radio because I am an off road enthusiast. I spend a lot of time exploring the Sonoran desert near my property. APRS is one of my safety measures because I go really close to the Mexican border. There is a lot of foot traffic from border crossers and I want to make sure that after several days of walking through the desert, my Jeep doesn't look too tempting. I usually have someone looking out for me on the map when I am off road. I also carry a hand held Microtracker All in One unit. 73, Steve W6SDM |

ALL functions (digipeating, decoding and assembling of packets,beaconing, etc) are pushed to application(s) running on the PC such as UIview, AGWpe, etc. The TNC's command interpreter is disabled and falls out of the picture completely. I can't understand why anyone continues to purchase and use this expensive, archaic and buggy device, when sound card software TNCs like the UZ7HO SoundModem are FREE, and outperform hardware TNCs. You can buy an entire Windows tablet PC for less than ONE-THIRD of the cost of a KPC3+, and dedicate it exclusively to running UIview and the Soundmodem. Which Weather Stations Work?
Because I am in such a remote location, I would like to add weather to my APRS and also do CWOPS reports. I know that the Peet Brothers and Davis weather stations are "APRS ready" but they would also put quite a dent in my meager budget for ham radio related toys.
Has anyone had any success with using one of the less expensive weather stations such as Accurite, to compile data that UIView32 can use? I know that there's a specific format and I am wondering if any of these less expensive programs have software that's flexible enough to format it as such. Thanks and 73, Steve |

It took me a while to find UIView32.ini - I have Windows 8.1 set up to display the file name without the extension in file explorer.? I did have UI flood set up in my KPC3+ as AZ.? In the UIView32.ini file the value was 30.? I changed it to AZ. UITRACE was set to TRACE.? I changed that to WIDE3,3. Does that sound correct??
