Have been running my Beacon from Guernsey but nothing heard from the North
of us. One other station GU7DHI operating on 2mtrs and one other 2U1EKH on
70 cms.

Are there any stations on the South Coast picking us up.

Running 16 watts from an IC2E and a home brew linear and the antenna a home
brew Slim Jim which in the past has accessed the HULL 2 Mtr. repeater with
30 watts.

Don't remember anyone replying to this, so........

So, what's the score with the Kenwood TH-D7 then?

I'm thinking of getting one. Will AGWPE drive it? How well does it
work
with UI-View (both using it indoors and in the car)? How well does the
9k6 packet work with it?

Right Keith, I have one, it's about 7 months old and it's the plums.

What's wrong with it?

The antenna isn't brilliant, but it works, there are a number of
replacements available from over the pond, with much better performance.
The belt clip is ok, but you can rip the back off the battery if you catch
the radio whilst it's attached to your belt.
KISS mode doesn't work too well, infact Roger is working on this at the
moment.

What's good about it?

Pretty much everything else. I've had no problems whatsoever with mine.
There have been reports of problems with the A model, so much so that
Kenwood listened and quickly did a bug fix of the radio for those in the
US.

To specifically answer your questions:
Don't know about AGWPE, but the KISS thing may be a problem.
The tracker side works fine with UI-View (I use mine in the car all the
time) and the messaging on the will work with the next (?) release of
UI-View.
9k6, haven't tried it yet, but I'm going to try it this weekend coming
during a node test.

Hope that helps.....

Re Mir.

Names John QTH Widnes in Cheshire.
I recieved a QSL card this morning Saturday from VY1RT
Ron in the Yukon Canada to confirm he heard my Beacon on 145.985
via Mir with the signal 5/4/9.
So many thanks once again to ROGER G4IDE for such a great program I
never thought that I would ever get a card for such a contact
just goes to show you never know who can hear you beacon till the cards
arrive.

I was there- but despite several connected stations, nothing in UI except from
MIR and a couple digipeating to each other.

I heard you at the end of the pass, but not thru MIR. Bit of an odd one that,
60degree elevation and 5/9 signals!

Re: Heard on 144.800 morning 17th July

Hi Ciemon

I heard you a couple of times over the weekend. Rather than use RELAY,WIDE
(only use this initially) use known stations to go a specific route. I'd
suggest using NRW or BHM as the start point, try CQ,G7BHM,WIDE,WIDE. If you
monitor the packet you'll get a start come up after G7BHM ie
CQ,G7BHM*,WIDE,WIDE if he hears you.
Thanks for the tip - I've tried pinging BHM with no response although
I certainly hear him direct. I have never logged NRW direct, only
via digipeat.

I'll gladly send a list with you on it,even a jpg, if that's what you're
after.
That's OK - I just wanted some re-assurance that I was getting out
and you have given me that - thanks....

Denis Pibworth G4KWT

P.S. Have just finished boxing up my tracker (ICOM ICW2/PacComm
Handipacket/GPS 12XL) and will be giving it a try on Sunday - any
reports gratefully received....

Re: BPQ Digi Update

Seems fine to me,

Although, at present levels of activity, reducing the number of
transmissions is only saving the nanoseconds worth of electricity expended
in re-digipeating. :-)

I'm sure that it will save an ulcer or two for the good remote sysops of
various BBSs, if anyone happens to leave a BPQDIGI 'on' somewhere where it
should not be 'on' though.

<Grin>

De Dave (G0DJA)

From: Roger Barker <roger@...>

This version has a couple of improvements:-

1. It won't digipeat frames sent by MYCALL. Example - I have WIDE in my
alias list, MYCALL is set to G4IDE. I send a beacon -
G4IDE>CQ,RELAY,WIDE
I then hear my own beacon being digipeated by a RELAY -
G4IDE>CQ,RELAY*,WIDE
Although I'm digipeating as WIDE, I don't digipeat it because I sent it.

2. Suppression of duplicate digipeats is now supported. If a frame that
has already been digipeated is heard again within a configurable time
period, then it won't be digipeated again. Example - WIDE is in the
alias list. I hear a beacon -
G8MZX>CQ,RELAY*,WIDE
So I digipeat it. I then immediately hear the same beacon via a
different RELAY, but I don't digipeat it again.

Hope that all makes sense!

To reply to my own message...

It seems that on the earlier passes the French person in the MIR crew is
operating on phone. I can't imagine what several hundred stations on FM
all calling at once must sound like!

The later passes are packet. I definitely have more success at the very
start of the pass, presumably because the satellite is still out of
range of a lot of the EU traffic.

I have also noticed PE stations using what one is announcing as "APRS
space mode" - perhaps this is another addition to the "protocol"?

Heard mir again last night at 21:00 but still nothing
on the screen.

Decided to have a listen around on voice and
discovered VERY low RX sigs then discovered short on
antenna downlead.

23:00 pass much better!!!

Heard several stations then switched back to 144.800
and heard G4LVZ in Tamworth and G7VUR mobile in North
Birmingham.

easier for more people to have a try at digi'ing their beacons via the
satellite. Yesterday evening (19th) I found it quite easy to get a
beacon through using only 3W from a handheld into a zero gain vertical

The MIR frequency is 145.985, but, if the tuning step of your rig is
12.5kHz, the Doppler shift will allow you to get in during the first
part of each pass if you use 145.9875.

In UI-View "Station Setup", set "Unproto address" to "BEACON,R0MIR",
make sure your "Beacon comment" is short, and set "Beacon interval" to
0.5 (every 30 seconds). However, once you've seen that your beacon has
been digi'd, please set the interval to something longer to give others
a chance!
