In 10mm I tend to use a different base size/format and in all scales I tend to use terrain pieces (logs, rocks, bushes) to denote the level of the big man.

For a big man you could put a radio operator on the same base. I know someone who puts his Arabian army commander on a flying carpet with dancing girls on the same base. So a radio op might not be

For my 6mm ww2 stuff, I base the infantry on 1p coins and the big men on 2p coins. I use as many figures as the BMs level as a quick visual reminder. Then fill out the base with odd jeeps, kettenkrads
