Having wheeled these buggers out, I suddenly realised I don't know
what their range is! They had theoretical range of around 200 yards,
but had no accuracy that that range. An accurate range of 80 yards
is stated, which matches it up to the PIAT of panzerfaust. So 12" on
the table-top for reasonable accuracy, up to 24" with a much reduced
chance of a hit. The AVRE's main weapon was a spigot mortar. When
it had fired some poor sod in the front of the hull had to stick his
head out and shove another charge down the muzzle. Nice job, no need
to waste spending money on an expensive pension scheme.
