Re: Campaigns After Gettysburg

Um, Grant chasing Lee the North->South length of Virginia was ¡°eventful¡±.? Lee would ¡°own the field¡± and Grant, instead of falling back and regrouping, saddled up and just moved forward. ?The largest cavalry-only fight in North American history was fought at Trevilian Station the first week of June 1864, Custer lost his underwear and camp girl there.? David Hunter made Ben Butler look effective in the Shenandoah Valley.

There¡¯s some meat on the bones from July 1864 to April 1865.

Subject: [TooFatLardies] Campaigns After Gettysburg

?

Greetings All,

I was always under the impression that, once Lee's army crossed the Potomac in the aftermath of Gettysburg, the war in the East was uneventful.? It turns out that there was active campaigning in the Virginia theatre.? However, there was no big battle so it was ignored.? (The finale was the Mine Run campaign and a battle that never happened).? It turns out that there was considerable action in this period, including several cavalry engagements.

A historian named Jeffrey Hunt has researched this and is working on the third volume of a trilogy.? I just heard him give a lecture on the subject and am wondering if there is grist for scenarios either for Sharp Practice or Pickett's Charge.? I'm not a Civil War buff but was impressed that one of the cavalry actions featured Custer presumably with his Spencer-armed brigade.

Take care

Tom from Seattle
