Re: Anywhere to get a clear copy of the circuit diagrams

One of the things I find extremely helpful is the Byonics archive: Lots of good old reference materials, old config software, etc. A nice Museum of all things Byonics!?http://www.byonics.com/tinytrak4/

Rob,

Yes, I do too. The MTT4BT is on the verge of being just a tad too complicated to draw out that way on a single page. Remember the old "Sam's Photofacts" publications filled with schematics that folded up like road maps? Maybe you are not that old, but in those ancient days, almost every commercial electronic product had a Photofacts pub for bench technicians!?

I didn't remember seeing a V8 until I just check Byon's website.?
The version in V8 is VERY clear!

I guess I am just old school, but I prefer the old style schematics with lines crossing and showing the trace connections more than the ones which require you to find labels (like PA3 at the uP and the PA3 up in the right corner at JP15).?

I know Scott has posted questions about the TTL vs. RS232 level shifting portion of the circuit.? These circuits are different in the 2 products as the kit has 2 sets of jumpers.?

The one I have in my box, I think, is a previous module from the GPS5OEM from Byonics.

For other projects I personally like the uBlox models.? I really like their configuration software and the newer ones have faster update rates.? Since these are TTL as well, I am not sure how to get the other port to change to TTL on the prebuilt TT4.

Thank you very much for getting back to me.... I was digging through my electronics and I just happened to have an HC 06 on hand ... Not sure what the difference in the hc-05 and hc-06 are...but it is the variety that has a" level: 3.3v" over the rx tx .

Re: ETA on more TT4BT units? Or a good alternative?

When buying the HC-05 module, read the instructions.? Some are 5V tolerant on the input (RX) pin.? The TX pin will toggle the Atmega chip just fine.? Look for those that say 'for Arduino' (another Atmega chip).? Then look for statements in the details like: "Level interface 3.3V, you can directly connect a variety of microcontroller (Arduino / 51 / AVR / PIC / ARM / MSP430, etc.), 5V microcontroller can also be directly connected. Directly connected to the microcontroller serial port, you can not go through MAX232 chip! "

Also, check the labeling on the bottom of the board.? If it shows 3.3V over the RX/TX I would look at the next one.? Always worth posting a question as well.? You can use resistors (as Alan notes) to rop the voltage on the RX pin, but that tends to limit the max baud rate.? Seems to work fine at 19200 though.

Final NOTE: the HC-05 module will not work with Apple devices (BT2.0 has licensing issues).? You will need to look at BT 4.0 BLE (like HC-08 or HM-10).? These are harder to configure for just serial communication though.

In my design of the MTT4BT transceivers, we built an HC-05 into the unit so that you can jumper select either a wired, serial port, or the BT module. Additionally, there is a jumper setting that allows the configuration of the HC-05 module through the serial port on the box. This is so it can be given a name, ( Instead of just a number) Password, Baud rate, etc.? It is helpful if the Baud rate of the HC-05 can be set to the default start-up rate of the MTT4BT ( 19200? but its not 100 percent necessary. With new TT4's, you can configure the TT4 from either PORTA or PORTB, so if things get messed up, you can always recover. You can configure MTT4BT's through either port, but like the regular TT4, you can only load new firmware through PORTA ( There are few reasons you would need to anyway)?

Note that the HC-05 Bluetooth module is actually looking for a TTL input of 3 Volts, not the 5 Volt TTL with which the TT4 chip communicates. This is not unusual with GPS modules. In the MTT4BT, there is a voltage divider consisting of a pair of resistors, to prevent smoking anything. You can see how this is handled in the MTT4BT manual where there is a schematic and detailed info on how to configure the BT module to make it happily compatible with the TT4 controller. The MTT4BT design also incorporates LED's for the BT status lights. It is much easier to configure the BT modules if you can see the status lights!?

FYI, I stole the idea of a built in BT module from Rob, who brute-forced a BT module into an earlier MTT4 design.?

Re: ETA on more TT4BT units? Or a good alternative?

The JP7 settings are only for 1 of the ports (don't remember which).
I think it is secondary port: PORTB.
Yes, using Jumpers, you can switych between the 2 types.

If you are using an RS232 GPS, you would want that connected to PORTA, and the TTL to PORTB with the jumpers as discussed.? Having a reset switch can REALLY be a benefit with the Bluetooth module as you can reset the TT4 without shutting down the Bluetooth module.? Or SoftReset in a terminal program (I used a TeraTerm Macro) also works.

Yes, TX of the TT4 goes to RX or the Bluetooth and RX of the TT4 goes to TX of the Bluetooth.
I did find a STUPIDLY marked Bluetooth module where the manufacturer labeled 'which pin to connect to' rather than what the module's pin definition.? That is just BAD DOCUMENTATION and no manufacturer should label things that way.? But, if it doesn't work right away double check teh documentation.

As for power, the TT4 needs some.? Since my GPS/BT box doesn't have a power source of any kind, when it is connected, the TT4 must get power from the other side.? That's just my connection.

Inside a small project box, I have 2 devices that connect to a DE9 connector on the outside of the box.
These 2 devices are connect as follows:
? ?? Device inside box? ??? J2 DE9?????? Definition
?????? {unused}? ?????????????????? 1?????????????????? N/C
?????? BT Tx ???? ? ????????????????? 2?????????????????? PortA Rx
?????? BT Rx?????? ? ???????????????? 3?????????????????? PortA Tx
?????? BT Vin?????? ? ??????????????? 4?????????????????? 5V (JP6 set to 5V ONLY)
? ? ?? BT and GPS GND ???? 5?????????????????? Gnd
?????? GPS Vin???????????????? ??? 6?????????????????? Jumper under TT4 board to pin 4 now 5V
?????? GPS RX ? ? ? ?? ? ? ?????? 7?????????????????? PORTB TX
?????? GPS TX?????????? ? ???? ? ? 8?????????????????? PORTB RX
?????? {unused}???????????????????? 9?????????????????? N/C
NOTES:
* Wire such that pin order is: Gnd, Vin, Rx, and Tx but the ports go in opposit directions away from GND pin 5.
* I split the Ground so both devices are connected to the same pin.?
??? You could jumper 5 and 9 or pin 1 to avoid the splice, but that changes the pin order.
* With JP6 set to 5V, you would need to supply external 5V to power the TT4 on this connector,
???? so I power the TT4 from the Radio connector J1
* With the GPS and BT in a remote box, it is very easy to stick them on the dash or somewhere with sky view.
?? This also makes the BT 'in the clear' to connect to a tablem, phone, or computer with BT.

Since you have the built module which I think comes with the case for the kit, there is room in the box for someone to help you place a reset switch on the Atmega chip between pins 9 and 11.? Mount the switch reset in the case so you can't accidently press it.? => Just a thought.

I don't have the kit version of the tt4 but I read there's still a way to make it ttl output by cutting the 2 traces on the bottom and jumper the 2 right pins on jp7a and B to make it TTL ..... So then if I wanted to connect back to a computer for programming I would move the jumper back to the left and center of both jp7a and B to go back to RS232? Is that correct?

So if i made it ttl output is it as simple as connecting the 4 pins? Tx,Rx, ground,power5v to the?HC-05 Bluetooth module?

But it would be TX to RX and RX to TX I believe right?

I'm not an electrical engineer but if I can get the directions laid out correctly I'm very good at doing the modifications and the soldering.
I have a feeling this is sounding a little too easy lol

Oh and what was that about requiring power on the radio connector?
