I couldn't help to ponder .. the ESP32-WROOM chip will UART as well..?
The cost is reasonably similar to a "HC-06"
and can do, BT 4.1 and can be Wifi which is very tasty advantage..?

I do think the chips mentioned prior posts will for sure "drop in" they look to be 100% a good upgrade. but I sort of want to take it a step further still pondering, it adds another CPU to the mix however and this costs power.
40ma HC-05, vs 260ma! on the ESP32?the 8266 is half that at 170ma
tossing the idea out for others and more pondering...
