[qrptech] FYI Cheap ($2!) vernier dials from Aliexpress
An update on these:
The range of rotation is ~300 degrees with clutched stops at the ends. They take a 6 mm shaft, so drilling out is needed to accommodate 1/4" shafts. They are intended for single turn pots. So you only get 0-60 in 180 degrees. However, with laser engravers common, a custom dial shouldn't be a problem. So for anyone who is fond of pure analog radios they are a steal. I've attached one to an existing breadboard variable and also showed the bracket which is included with an air trimmer in position, but not attached. The air trimmer shaft just isn't long enough. There are a slew of other sellers, possibly at better prices. It changes constantly. This is all I have to say on this thread unless someone has a question. I thought I should give people a heads up that these were available at such reasonable prices. Have Fun! Reg NB link repeated because I forgot to copy the test list. |
Sorry. forgot to mention they are 8:1 ratio. Well, sorry about the inaccurate price. I got 10x for $38.65. It was a portion of a larger order. Sometimes I order 10x and get shipping charged for one. In this case I obviously did not care. It was still a fraction of the lowest price I'd ever seen. Obviously you're not interested in small vernier dials. I've gotten multiple refunds from Aliexpress. I've been pleasantly surprised. As easy as ebay. So now I search ebay, Amazon, Temu and Aliexpress. Anyone of them may have the best price at any time. I posted about these because both Temu and Aliexpress search is quite flaky. Because of history, these were thrown up in a page of random stuff. presented to me. I thought they would be of interest to others in these 3 lists so I posted a link. I only discovered Temu because of a post to qrptech. Have Fun! You can search TEMU and other sites with Google. Describe the item, theen? add the company's name after a space. I see a 10 or 20 turn pot and dial for under $4 on Temu, but my satellite internet is horrible, so I can't view te page. The severe latency causes many websites tio time out on me. It is a high orbit 55 GHz link. |
Send me the Link and I make you a screenshot.

I should have Fiber optic service soon, but thank you Tam. It is colder than usual in Central Florida.right now, and this Hughesnet system doesn't work well. Rain or heavy fog completely kills it. Sometimes for days at a time. I wouldn't be able to download the screenshot anyway. It took over a dozen attempts just to open Gmail. |
Just send the link over man. Sand n###y is on the spot.

Thanks for the heads-up. When I tried the link you sent, the price of one landed in Australia would be US$4.50 at today's exchange rate. 73 de Brian, VK2GCE0 -----Original Message-----

I see that a lot (in cases 2x more) . I don't know if they are hoping you will reorder without checking the new price, exchange rate changed or something else. The working search key is the part number and there are lots of sellers. I put all examples of a potentially low price option I find in my cart and then delete all but the cheapest as there is no way to find a listing again unless you've bought it before that I can find. Knowing that there *are* low cost, well made dials is a huge boon. Can't look for what you don't know to look for. Ebay paints a very pessimistic picture of pricing. I wasn't looking for these. They just showed up on the Aliexpress page so I searched on the part number and picked the cheapest option at the time. At $5 US they are still a great deal in my book. I'm going to mount one minus the ugly black plastic on a black anodized front panel for a QRP rig. Have Fun! ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello Reg, ? I have set up a folder where I put AliExpress misleading advertising; recent cases include: ¡¤???????? several Chinese vendors appear to be offering copies of Neumann U-87 and AKG C-414 condenser microphones for between AU$13 and AU$28; but when I try to order, I find it¡¯s just for the shock-mount that doesn¡¯t appear in the advertising image. ¡¤???????? when I tried to buy a multi-way military circular connector, or an assembled amplifier, I discovered that the advertised unit price only applies if I order 5000. ¡¤???????? a worse example was when I paid AU$350 for a Canon lens and received a very cheap copy of a Rolex watch; the vendor wouldn¡¯t accept a return for a refund. And of course, the watch didn¡¯t have a provenance certificate ¨C so, it was effectively worthless except as wrist bling. Telling AliExpress of these marketing tricks gets fat nowhere. So, caveat emptor, eh? ? Don¡¯t get me onto eBay. Its business model is to encourage buyers; eBay only earns its Shylockian commission when a buyer pays. Vendors are there under sufferance to entice buyers. Each time I seek help from eBay as a vendor where a buyer has claimed damage or non-delivery, I get nowhere. I notice now that eBay demands a fee upfront when you attempt to correspond with a call centre monkey whose native language is Spanish or Mongolian. ? I agree that a vernier drive for US$5 is a bargain, even when it¡¯s only for 300 degrees; it¡¯s a lesser copy of a Japanese original that did 360 degrees and came with several replaceable dials ¨C I used a couple with 180 degrees dials on a HB antenna coupling unit. I have a HB linear PSU where I used a 10 k pot for coarse setting of output Voltage and a 100 Ohm pot for fine adjustment. That 300 degrees vernier drive on the 10 k pot on its own would be simpler. But then I¡¯ld need to redesign the front panel ¨C perhaps about time ¨C there are controls on the back that could benefit from being at the front. ? Cheers, Brian ? From:

Brian, Lots of vendors link a low cost option in a listing which includes the featured item at much higher price. Your list will grow forever. List scam tricks instead. I got such a $38 bait and switch antenna for free when I thought I ordered a mag loop antenna and got a short whip with some LC circuit feeding it. Seller didn't ask for it back. I got a full refund. Bought a mag loop from another vendor who also showed a stand I did not get. I got most of the cost of a stand as a partial refund. Stand from another vendor arrived today and works great. Just the ticket for my Icom 705. I'm getting in a real lather to get relicensed. I was occasionally keying through the entire alphabet a 20 wpm today without an error (1 in 20 :-(. When I got single signal reception on a station 30 Hz above and 50 Hz below 2 stronger stations during a contest 5 days after I got my 705 I was hooked on CW. 3 stations running QSOs in 100 Hz? Wow! That is super cool. Overall, I'd have to rate Aliexpress, Temu and ebay about equal on customer support. But *all* are time consuming. Have Fun!
