Recommended ventilation clearance around a 2465 scope


 

All of the feet - both front and rear - on my 2465 have crumbled b/c of age. While I'm waiting for replacement feet, can anyone tell me the recommended clearance around the case? I couldn't find anything specific in the operator's manual other than it should "have good ventilation".

I have limited space on the shelf and want to place the rear of the 2465 case about 1in to 2in from the wall. I'm also going to temporarily put something underneath to raise it off the shelf for the bottom ventilation holes.

I have a 2440 and keep 3/4 underneath and 3" on sides and back. Nothing sitting on top at the moment.

My 2465B, ex-military, has the original plastic accessories envelope secured on the top of the scope, so that is essentially a "blanket".
I've never given a second thought to the thermal insulating properties of the envelope, being that it is original equipment.

As I understand it, the bottom panel with the ventilation holes is critical.
Under the scope, I have about 2.5cm (1") clearance with the bail handle positioned underneath the scope, and I spray compressed air through those holes every so often to keep them clear of dust build-up.

At the rear, the original long black legs provide sufficient clearance from the wall, for the fan exhaust.

For all 2400 scopes, they most important thing is NOT to place the scope on top of other heat generating equipment, its ability to withstand the added heat burden is very low. A bottom air gap is critical, as is a rear gap for the fan to work. Tek has an internal flow path to cool the instrument, but in the 2465 in particular, it doesn't take much blockage (bottom or rear) to quickly raise the temp inside leading to hybrid failure.

When I recap the 2465 series, I install a heat sink on the horizontal output IC. I take an expansion knock out from a PC case and drill 2 holes in it and bend it into a U shape for clearance from the case and use plenty of heat sink compound.

Thank you for the heat sink suggestion avtek2. Reading through the various threads about "horizontal output IC" cooling, there seems to be an even split between those that advocate installing a heat sink, and those that say the original engineering took "horizontal output IC" cooling into account. The fan in my particular scope was dead, and the prior owner apparently had been successfully using the 2465 that way ... "ouch"! I've replaced the scope with a new fan with the same specs rather than repair the old fan. For cooling, other than the fan replacement, I still haven't quite decided what do do about adding the heat sink.

I've finally finished 3D printing the rear feet for my scope. Luckily someone had already posted a model on Thingiverse, so I only had to tweak the CAD to lift it up a bit more than the original design. I'm also going to 3D print new front feet with a smidgen more height for ventilation per M Yachad's reply above. Hopefully these will give me more than enough clearance on the bottom of the scope.

Nothing better than a fan AND a heat sink for the Horizontal Chip. Digikey
has one but you have to drill your own holes in it. Part Number HS273-ND
