Jim- I like your option 2 otherwise here are not the best ideas especially my #3....do not use if you are forgetful or another person MAY use the device. 1. find another bad microwave use parts 2 .reinvent the safety devices or add a different one 3. remove safety devices and 4. use re-settable fuse btw i have a microwave where all safety devices are gone/bypassed due to failure...big red sign on front "THINK First before opening" and a big kill switch for HV next to handle... but I am the only one using it and no one else is around....it has been that way for years..... ¸é±ð²Ô¨¦±ð

So it looks like I have 3 options:
1) Send the microwave oven to the landfill - not going to happen. 2) Mess with the door latch in an attempt to fix it. 3) Leave it and hope it doesn't blow the fuse any time soon.? And doesn't leave the magnetron powered on while the door is open and burn somebody.
Unless somebody else has a better idea....

Your best bet is if you can find some sort of a repair manual for the unit (also often available from third-party vendors) and get the exact part numbers to search on.

Good ideas, Steve. Although the probability of finding an even close model at Goodwill is next to zero.
Well, we did buy a cheap $50 job at Best Buy. First one had to go back because of a sticky door. We didn't even want to go down that path. It is rather small, though, but we'll get by.
Thanks.

I doubt that Whirlpool made switches, though it's not impossible. Why make one when you can buy them from a company that makes switches? I had to replace a locking toggle switch in a Swiss reel-to-reel tape recorder (the toggle was broken off but I could see the locking mechanism). I even had the manual and it gave their part number, but not who made it. I pulled the switch out and figured out that it is was a standard SPST miniature locking toggle switch available from several sources. The one in there was Chinese-made (yep - in a Swiss tape recorder) and I just got a Cutler-Hammer equivalent. The switch assembly is another matter, if the switch is riveted in place in that assembly, you might have to drill out the rivets to replace it. If the metal parts are broken or worn, then you might need some metalworking experience to fix it.
Last resort - check a Goodwill store for a used model of the same microwave. You could use it as a parts source.
Good luck. I hope not having a microwave does not ruin your holiday meal plans.

Ha, that business about putting a big red flag on the thing would NOT go over very well with my wife!
I think I'll open it back up again and see how hard it is to remove the switch assembly and the switches. Weekend project.
Thanks, Renee.

All of the micro switches I have used for microwave door switch repair have been "generic" devices from my junk box. Some were even collected from junked microwave ovens!

Steve, Please allow a guess: You have been in charge to fix a Revox-Studer r2r, non? Rather sophisticated mechanics, but finest quality unless just retired from a radio station after 30 years of daily use. A nightmare to overhaul then, in my eyes. Regards, Joe

I have both Stellavox and Nagra machines. The problem with the Stellavox is the potted electronic modules. The pinch rollers also go bad but that is a common problem with most R to R machines. The broken switch was in an unusual version of a Nagra, a TRVR. It was made as a logging recorder so it is optimized for voice, not music. The one I had with the broken switch came from the US Government - you can imagine which service. The switch was broken presumably during the rough handling they got when being excessed. Fortunately the guy I got it from managed to talk the guy who was throwing them off the truck to hand it to him instead. And in keeping with the Tek thread, there were several Tek and HP spectrum analyzers in the pile that had already been thrown - not just dropped - off the truck.
