OT: Component sought
What I am looking for is something to allow a single sided PCB to be plugged into a DIL IC socket and have the tracks on the lower side.
The following links look almost right, but AFAICT they can only work on a DS PCB with plated holes (I just want to use single sided 0.1" strip-board for this). <> <> I'm sure something suitable must exist ... Thanks Dave |

What I am looking for is something to allow a single sided PCB to beAre you just building a few by hand? I've used the SIP pins you can buy as a strip of 20 or so in a similar application. To solder so the clad side of the PCB is on the bottom, I put the PCB on a small piece of 2x4. That holds the pins out enough that I can solder in place without the plastic getting in the way. 73 de Jim W4JBM "With a schematic in one hand, a soldering iron in the other, and a puzzled look on his face..." |

You can solder these to the lower side just fine, put the side with
the large diameter shoulder towards the PCB and perhaps even leave some gap. Then solder with a narrow tip. (I have soldered turned sockets top side many times, same thing). HOWEVER, this is not IPC610 compliant and thus you will end up in hell one day. If you can live with that, go ahead, at least it is warm there and we will be in good company. To mitigate the situation you could bend over the ends on the top side for the required mechanical retention. ST On Fri, Jul 20, 2012 at 8:12 PM, David C. Why not a molex 0.100" with 90 degree bend?

Dave, have you got any old wire wrap IC sockets? I have used them in the past for exactly this purpose, but I have to be careful which type of DIL socket I use on the MB as the pins are square for wire wrap and bigger than a standard IC pin. I solder them to the daughter board but leave the full length of pin to push into the MB socket. It is a fixed height above the MB. Geoff. |

That would be a sound option, thank you. On balance after reading all the replies, I think I'll probably just use the first of the items I listed in my original mail.

There used to be machined contact plugs (Augat, others) that had small diameter pins on both top and bottom of the green plastic substrate. I believe the pins were small enough to plug into a socket.

Actually, you could get single row strips of such pins now. Just find them at Samtec and request samples. Samtec is awesome and is quick (a few days for samples). I use them in many production products. Den --- In TekScopes@..., KeepIt SimpleStupid <keepitsimplestupid@...> wrote:

Forgot about soldering the bottom. You could offset the 2 rows of double ended pins off the board, just tack one or two pins at the height you need for soldering and finish the others.
