Looking for RSAVu...

Fellow Tekkies,

I've just become the proud owner of a RSA3008A RTSA. My immediate
question is what the difference was between the 'A' and the 'B' versions
of this unit (I've not been able to find anything conclusive, so far).

Second point: Does anyone have a current copy of Tek's RSAVu software
available? I've tried downloading it from Tek, but got some kind of
bizarre error message about having to get approval for downloads from
some unspecified government source...?

This makes me think it may have been pulled from the archive, and
perhaps the web page was choking on its cookies or some such nonsense.

Thanks!

I have the RSA 3308A with Opt. 21 ¨C Advanced Measurement Suite - that's very handy.

The 'A' models display the real time data in spectrogram format.

The 'B' models have the "DPX" transform engine which creates the real time spectrum bitmap - color graded spectral density (variable persistence digital phosphor)

That makes the 'B' models more expensive on the used market.

OK -- This sounds like a serious hardware difference between the two.
Thanks for clarifying.

Anyway -- I'm still trying to hunt up the software. Can you assist?

Go to the TekWiki RSAVu page. On the right side of the screen you will find two download options. The top one goes to Tek & errors out but the bottom link works.

Let us know about all the fun things you do with this software.

Aha! That's got it... And yes, I'll be happy to speak up about it as
soon as I best the learning curve I'll undoubtedly face. ;-)

Thanks.

I have always liked Tektronix spectrum analyzers. I had a 496, then a 494P - that was awesome. Rock solid, no drift, frequency accurate, and direct entry of parameters from the front panel (once you master the color coded shift system)

I sold the 494P so I could buy the holy grail 'big dog' 2782. What an incredible instrument that is - I still have it. I got the RSA to see what it could do for me and what I could learn. It's very impressive - fast and accurate. The windows OS makes things easy. The USB ports let you use storage do-dads plus a keyboard and mouse. Two ports is a little limiting but a USB hub will combine your keyboard and mouse into one leaving the other free for a memory device.

The first thing I did when I got it was to open it up to find the hard drive. You would hate to have an investment of thousands of dollars become unusable because of a failure.

I took it out, ordered a duplicate, and cloned it. The machine is now running on the clone. I also archived an image file.

While I was in there, I found that there were many bulging caps in the power supply and on the CPU card so I ordered a zillion parts and did a major re-cap.

I suggest you inspect yours.

I had already planned to image/back up the hard drive, yes. As for the
caps, I will certainly inspect. Thanks much!

I think Tek stopped developing RSAVu about 2010 and now they have another program:

SignalVu-PC is the foundation of RF and vector signal analysis software that helps you easily validate RF designs. It is based on the signal analysis
engine of the RSA5000 Series real-time signal analyzers and runs on your computer or Windows tablet. You can now move your analysis of
acquisitions off the instrument and anywhere.

Key features
Analyzes waveforms acquired by Tektronix real-time signal analyzers and oscilloscopes, including:

Tektronix real-time signal analyzers (RSA3000, RSA5000, RSA6000, SPECMON Series, RSA500, RSA600, and RSA306 Series)
