7CT1N plugin boards

For those who did not see, I am offering two boards per person, all you need to is contact me off list, and send an SASE (self addressed, stamped envelope) with enough postage to get the boards back home.? The boards are free.

Photos added in album 7CT1N test fixture

You will need:

one switch

E-Switch 400UDP1L1BLKM6RE @$3.30

three banana plugs

*Johnson/Cinch 108-0753-001 @$1.35 each*

You may substitute for the banana plugs as desired, as long as they fit.? The E-Switch was picked because of price and size, and that it is a currently available model.? You could just bypass it with two jumpers and not switch between A and B.

Two or four transistor sockets.

Your choice on this, the TO5 case can accept? pin sockets of the right size, or a standard transistor socket, as can the smaller socket.

each board weighs 1/10 oz, or about 3 grams each

Two boards are 2/10 oz, so a stamp, SASE and two boards should weigh well within the limits of US first class mail.

Very nice. I wished I had a 7CT1N. Been looking for one for a while.

The reason I am limiting this to two boards is that I have no idea of the demand, so two ought to give people a good chance to get a set.? Depending on demand, I may change my mind.

Yes, I couldn't send mail directly to you either :-)

Put a couple aside and let me look into this.

I've just found out several things about International first class mail.

1) it can be expensive

2) you can't usually buy US stamps where you are (wonder why?)

so I'd propose this:

the cost of a 1 ounce (which this is under) US mail envelope is $1.20 USD.

There's no real way to get me that money, so I'm afraid that you're stuck sending me a letter.

If you can send $2.00 USD (all I've got requests from is Canada) in the SASE, I'll take care of the visit to the P.0.

Some of the extra is a bit of compensation for the trip.? Sorry about that, but for some odd reason, the US will not honor Canadian postal stamps.

odd......

If this becomes a problem, we can work something out, I think.

A learning experience, it is......

Hi Harvey,

If you're not considering selling them, have you considered to just make the gerber files available online (let's say github)?
A lot of people now regularly buy PCBs from JLCPCB or pcbway. They can basically just "batch" these boards in one order.

Best regards,

I would do that, except for one small problem.? I'm using EAGLE 7.x with a hobby style license.? I am specifically prohibited from selling the boards.? Now, if I could guarantee that nobody would make the boards and sell them, that might be fine.

As to the design, it's essentially trival for anyone with another PCB program (other than EAGLE) to use.? For EAGLE, easy enough to make and do, it's the license that's the problem.

Hi Harvey,

I don't have a [5]CT1N - yet - just a low priority slot on the wish-list.

If you have boards left after distributing to everyone with more concrete use for them, please email me your address. Via my profile here.

Jeff, do you make PC boards or design them?? I have a capacitor template I could throw in, since you overachieved a bit with the return packaging.

Harvey

Hi Harvey,
Thank you for making the 5CT1N / 7CT1N Adapter available to the members of TekScopes. That is very generous.
For at least the past 5 years I have been creating prototypes of a dual transistor adapter but until about 2 weeks ago I was never satisfied with the results.
I compliment you on the absolute simplicity of your design. I cannot imagine that anyone could make it simpler. My solution looks more like an actual Tek designed adapter.

As you have discovered by now even something as simple as giving away your PC boards for free gets complicated by reality.
I think I can solve this dilemma for you. I propose two possible solutions:
#1 Solution: Make a PDF available of what you designed that anyone else can use as a guide to make their own PCBs. You will not be violating the Eagle license by sharing your schematic and board layout in a PDF since there are no Gerber files involved.
1) Make a copy of the schematic (In Eagle the sequence is: File > Export > Image > Clipboard) and save it in Word (or whatever word processor you use).
2) Next do the same for the board.
3) Save your word processor's document as a PDF so everyone can read it
4) Upload the PDF to the Files section on TekScopes

#2 Solution: Reimburse you from the TekScopes account:
1) For the people who cannot send you a SASE send them two of your boards and keep track of what you spend to do this.
2) After 1 month notify everyone this is their last chance to get your boards
3) Wait another week for the last requests for your boards to arrive then send me the amount you spent on postage and I will reimburse you from donations to the TekScopes account.

The only complication I could add would be to put in some surface mount (0805) ferrite inductors.? I haven't seen the need yet. This was only for small signal transistors, and is a solution that keeps the alligator clips away.

The switch is optional, and if you want to do one transistor (and not a compare A-B) then it can be jumped with a savings of the switch cost.

It's not really a dilemma.? The only people who have problems with a SASE are the people not living in the US.? I plan to make a pay-pal account available for the cost of the international first class mail.

I can do that easily enough, and I could also possibly (which nobody has mentioned) simply redesign it in KiCad (I'd have to work on that a bit) which has no license restrictions.

I have only one person who has difficulty getting a SASE to me, and that can be solved.? If people from outside the US want boards, then if they email me, we can work something out, one way or another.

The people in the US who have wanted boards have been able to send an SASE, so the entire effort has been a bit of cardboard, some blue masking tape, and then putting the result in the mailbox.? It's not a problem.? I don't feel the need to have Tekscopes reimburse me, but I do thank you for the generous offer.

Harvey

There are still boards left? I contacted Harvey but didn't get a response so I figured they were gone.

I just received the boards about a week ago. They're beautiful, and deceptively small, but it was obvious that they fit the 7CT1N on even the most cursory inspection.

Now I'm just waiting on the banana plugs and switch.

Thanks
