7k extenders

Hi,

Heads up guys. Some guys said they may want to get one of my 7k extenders. What may be the last one is on ebay, item 290836441070 closes tomorrow. The other 2 remaining have been spoken for.

I'd like to build my own (no disrespect intended - your's look pretty nice!). I would be interested in some of the card-edge connectors if you want to sell a couple or know from where one might acquire them.

Cheers,
Dave

Dave,

I got my connectors and paddle boards from John griesson. I understand your desire for your own work. me too. I do not think John will have have anytime soon. I asked him for 5 more sets and he said he is too busy now. Maybe someone else will take up the task. My own experience is that sales are too slow to be worth a commercial approach.

Jerry,

Thanks. I've just been through this with John. I bought the parts for TM500 extenders but, as you said, he is out of connectors for the 7xxx extenders. I think I need to find a source for the connectors. We'll see what I can find.

Cheers,
Dave

Is the pitch of the connector 0.1¡± (2.54mm) as opposed to the wider pitch in the TM500 series, if so, connectors should be reasonably easy to find. Just my 2 pence worth, I¡¯ll be looking to build one, for insurance (7633 working at the moment). I post here with my findings.

Hi,

The pitch is 0.1 inch but the pin count of 76 is not easy to find. John had some made. My first extenders used ISA connectors from old AT motherboards cut down to size, not elegant but functional. If someone is going to make another batch of paddleboards, let me suggest they be made to use 34 pin flat cable connectors and smb coax fittings. Maybe we could get John to redo his?

Similar to Jerry's, I also built a homemade 7xxx extender using old PC ISA parts. Although less than elegant in appearance, it works. Note, I used a rather long hard drive cable. It has too many wires, so I tied the extras off and grounded them. Without being grounded in my first try, they acted as antennas. Once grounded the extender works fine. I also used an extra plug-in frame for plugging the extender into the mainframe. My fabrication skills leave something to be desired so my extender isn't pretty, but it works.

They're a custom from me that fits well and doesn't let card edge fingers slide sideways and cross
signal wires. Pledges to buy 25 units are needed to reorder a production batch efficiently.
It's going to be slower selling more than 25 this time until some kind of advertising is done,
since all the pent up demand on this list was satisfied by the 160 kits sold so far.

TM500 kits had no pent up demand. They have not recovered their costs yet...

We can talk. If smb edge launch pcb connectors can be bought cheaply, that might work well enough.
Costs and selling price matters quite a lot to the Tektronix-repairing public though.

Here are some new list server addresses for such discussions of boring components
that don't interest many Tek scope users:

John,

I forget what the cost is for the connectors. It seems we might have almost enough interest to buy 25, particularly if people buy more than one. I personally would be willing to buy several.
What is the G&A for purchasing one lot, aside from transportation charges? Is it small, medium, large? Is a lot of 25 simply too small to futz with?

Anybody else think similarly?

Regarding the time investment conflict that you currently have, is there anything that anyone else (perhaps myself) can do do to help? I am not in a particular hurry, but the longest journey, etc.

Cheers,
Dave

Since the testing is already done and it has a part number, just one day's effort spread over
a few days to start the transaction.

no. If 25 sell, I'll buy another 25 for other like the rigid extender and Jerry's idea
of an easier to assemble 7k_flex development.

It's mostly getting 25 units pledged, ( and a few more for no show possibilities when money is needed).
The same old kit with its soldering required can have the same price, $35 for 2 foot wires basic version.

It's possible a rigid one could go fast track before Chinese new year, but not a redesigned flex one.

Like Jim, I would be interested in 3 sets (6 connectors) to make
up 3 7000 extenders. I already have a Tek flexible extender, but
need to have at least another for some of my plugins and making
two of the same kind would probably work better than trying to
make another flexible extender.

I will buy 2 sets if there is a run made.
