Hi Everybody,

Inspired by recent talk of the admirable 500 series, I'd like to share my story and some questions that keep bugging me. I'm in Eastern Europe.

A month ago a local trader in scavenged EE components (whom I know for some time) boasted of his new catch - a complete 545A. He had already sold half of its 6DJ8s, and was getting ready to take it apart for sockets and other stuff. To cut the story short I held him off, went to see it in person (excellent condition, no corrosion, just dusty), and redeemed it with as much of the original tube set as I could (read: no 12AX7s/12AT7s and just a few spent 6DJ8s). Total cost (part cash part some of my stuff traded): approx $300. Fortunately I had a graveyard of 6DJ8 (randomly accumulated pile with ~50% life in them) to stuff the 545A and it came to life. So it wasn't even broken, I was able to calibrate it with half dead tubes. CRT is sharp and like Vegas at night. Two years ago I did the same with a 555 (somewhat poorer condition and missing power supply) for approx. $350. I cannot even fire it up, it's sitting in my storage hoping for that power supply to show up one day. For comparison I paid $400 for my 7104 with 1x7A29, 7B10 and 7B15.

What I cannot grasp are the market facts (value in $) behind this. In France (far richer and more developed economy than Eastern Europe) complete 500s do come up on eBay for $100-$250. Yet somewhere else where a teacher's salary is like $450, there seem to be people willing to dish out $40 for 1 used Buggle Boy (Amperex Holland) 6DJ8, $60 for Siemens or $80 for a Telefunken. Or are they? With this math someone may profit hundreds of $ for a 585 dug up out of some old man's basement. I understand the fact that there are less and less NOS tubes and it pushes the price up, but still the buyer's motivation will put the final cap on it. So I'm wondering who exactly are the people ultimately driving the scavenging of 500s? Are the snatchers in poorer countries just selling on eBay to the richer? There are hundreds of "buy it now" overpriced ads on eBay sitting there for years, does that mean there is a huge stock of 500s guts hopelessly stuck in some collective pipe dream? All I know is I better not share the cost of my two acquisitions with my better half.

Hi. There is no shortage of NOS tubes in my experience. For example, Radio Electric Supply ( ) in Florida has over 12 million tubes in their stock. I ran across a guy recently at a hamfest who has 7 tractor-trailers on his property stuffed to the top with new tubes. I think there is a common belief that the tubes in Tektronix equipment are somehow better than new one you can buy from a dealer. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most have hundreds of hours on them and a lot of stress. Plus nobody is going to guarantee anything about them, or even test them. Just my 2 cents worth.

Do you know where to get a set of new Bendix 6900's?

Try the tube dealer mentioned in the previous post. He has the largest
collection of vacuum tubes in the world.

PS the owner just died a few months ago and no one is sure what's going
to happen to the business so if there's anything that you want, you'd
probably better get it now.

This is very sad news. Do you know which one of the brothers it was? Sad to hear, they have been very helpful in the past with reasonable prices and good shipping practices. I hope the business will carry on.

It was Stan Winston that passed away. I don't know if he had a brother
or not but I've heard that there is another relative involved that is
trying to sell the business or sell off the assets. Stan inherited the
business from his father 20+ years ago so there could be a brother that's
also part owner. We're all hoping that the business will continue but it
doesn't look like it will. IMO This would be a good opportunity for a
foreign investor that wants to own and operate a US business so that they
could get an immigration visa.

Just a note: I have it on good authority that the inventory
that was in the building Stan was leasing has been
moved, sold, or something. It all went out of state, so I've
heard. I have reason to think that it was the property
owner that had it removed.

Hmm. Radio Electric Supply is owned by Dale and Roy Rogalski. I don’t know if anyone else was associated with them. I talked to them today and apparently are doing well. Are you thinking of some other supplier perhaps?

Thanks Roy. Lots of people out there selling tubes I guess.

An enterprising and unscrupulous person would pay for the scope, pull the tubes, sell them on eBay at a premium to the audio-nuts, use the proceeds to repopulate the scope with NOS tubes purchased at reasonable prices, and still make bank on the deal.

Which 500 series was the 6900 used in? (I believe 6900 a twin medium mu triode.) 6AX7/12AX7 was high mu.
Bendix was (their gone) an interesting company, involved in the aerospace industrial military supply. (A common name during WWII and the 50's, and 60s.
The 6900 was a "hardened" tube.. made to withstand high g, shock, vibration, and was supposed to be more reliable. (well ... for at least the brief time a launched missile lasted.)
Unless one is planning on launching one's class A, audio amp, into low earth orbit... one doesn't need Bendix 6900s.

I can say that the Tung-Sol 5687 is the NOS part to use to replace the 6900. But even so they have to be tested, see the reject rate in the Excel spreadsheet.

As nearly as I can tell the Raytheon-branded 5687 was a Tung-Sol part

No not really ... unless one's reality is "reality T.V. shows." I think, most of the people doing this have a box of old, dusty, and used tubes, sitting in the basement... that will "sell on Ebay, for a bunch, a lot, of money!"... some day... or so they think. They're only dreaming. So disappointing, for them, when Ebay bills them for the ads.

No, I was talking about ESRC1 Tube Warehouse, located on Pinecastle Blvd,
in Orlando. FYI There is also another tube dealer in Orlando; Vacuum Tubes
Inc at 1080 Sligh Blvd. However AFIK Stan had the largest number of VTs of
any dealer in the world. I know he had over 3.5 million years ago and
I've *heard
*that before he died he was up to about 12 million. At one time he had
about 6 LARGE bays in a commercial warehouse but rent had gotten excessive
so I know that he had started to try and reduce his inventory and floor
space in the last couple of years.

Stan used to host a hamfest like event called FAWG at his warehouse
twice a year and he was always very helpful and very generous. He will be
sorely missed.

eBay doesn't bill for ads. They get a final value fee for sales.

Not totally true. Stores cost and they do have hidden fees for listing unless you get free listing privileges.? My 23rd year on eBay and boy, has it changed, from great to reasonably sucky.

I've gotten 100 free listings a month for the last couple of years. Shortly before I decided to get a store they upped it to 200.
