Hi,

I am looking to replace the minature BNC bulkhead connector on my 067-0587-01. I purchased a sma pigtail (180653762159) from china thinking it would be a good one. I did not do enough research. First off it is 15CM long and I should have specified 30CM.

I thought I had an SMA cable in my box of goodies that would provide the connection from the standardizer to my other bnc test equipment. I do not. SMA comes in screw on and snap on versions. I have snap on. Then sex comes in.

I have always been confused with connector terminology. A standard BNC pip cable has connectors on both ends with what I would call a female shell and a center pin that I would describe as male. I see this called a bnc male. Obviously the center pin names the sex.

The pigtail I bought has a male pin and a male shell. They call it a female!????

Please advise!

I can sense some sexual frustration here.

I know little about HF connectors, but I think SMA only comes as screw on and the snap on version is SMB.

The gender is always defined by the center (signal) pin.

For many (most?) coax connectors there exists a "reverse polarity" variant where the center pin has the opposite gender to what you would usually expect for a given shell. This is meant to prevent unintended connections, a bit like tamper proof screws. It only works for a short time until the Chinese mass produce the part to defeat the system, from then on it just adds confusion.
.
You bought an RP SMA male, I think.

The connector you need for the cal fixture is a special miniature bayonet lock type, I am not qualified to advise but I do know for a fact that others here are since it has come up a couple of times over the years.

You have a reverse SMA. Used for FCC part 15 devices like access points, etc.

Yea, I know.? Guess what RP stands for "Reverse Polarized", so I guess you reverse the gender definitions.

There is also SMA and SMA-RP.? be carefull.

There are Standard sex connectors, and reverse sex connectors.? Good examples are the CPC connectors by AMP.

In general, if the male pin is in the female housing it's a male.? Any other time, I check pictures.

There are also hermaphrodite connectors such as the IEEE 488 bus.

Don't forget about RP (reverse polarity) versions of the connectors. On RP-SMA, you have external threats with a protruding pin mating to internal threads with a recessed socket.
Regular SMA has the pin inside the internal threads and the socket inside the external threads.

First, SMA is always screw on. The snap on connectors you have are
some other type.

Second, look at the listing again, the pigtail you bought is RP-SMA.
RP means reverse polarity. That's why it's extra confusing.

And 'RP' to 'normal' SMA adaptors are available.

Actually, there are three; SMA, SMB and SMC. A Service Monitor I have has
all three !! Had to buy a bucketfull of adapters from the "evil empire".

The pin makes a connector male.
Sma is screw only, never seen snapon sma. There are dozens of RF connectors, some look alike but are different. If it is for vna use or calibration and RF buy good radial, amphenol or other well known brand, no China junk.

Jerry,

This is an RP-SMA, (reverse polarity) the thing that is half-male and half-female invented for Wi-fi use to avoid people could use regular amplifiers and boost their wifi range.

You should avoid anything thet mentions RP for non-Wifi use. For your use, you are searching for something like item 150893862849. Cut and keep the female end to the needed length.
