One should be warned about government auctions- if, down the road, someone decides that the items should not have been sold for whatever reason, they will come asking for you to return them. ?Many stories have been told here in the past. I dodged the bullet, and will no longer buy from any of these auctions regardless of how good the deals are.

I'm not current on the regulations, but I recall some items being flagged "non-export" or similarly restricted, and requirements for documentation of any future resale. They wanted a Tek specan back from me, but it too had been parted out... I just don't want to deal with them anymore.

Isn't it really strange that they decide only some time after you get the
item that they shouldn't have sold it?
Seems a bit late...

I've read about destruction of sensitive equipment once, they even
accounted for the possibility of information burnt into the screen, in
which case the CRT was supposed to be smashed....

Oh well, and here I was going to buy that military hospital, better not
then.... ;-)

Ihave bought from a couple of government auctions, but it was a couple of decades ago. A good friend of mine makes his living buying and selling electronics from government auctions, but usually by scavaging parts. He has won tens of thousands of bids, and he has never encountered a "buy back" request. So I am thinking this must be extremely rare and not something I would worry about.
Some of the items are covered under export restrictions ??? the same that would apply to new items. These are clearly stated in the lot description before you bid. The more common concern is when items are required to be "de-militarized". Originally, this meant things like guns in airplanes must have their barrels crushed to make the weapons non-functional. However, in some cases it means that a good item with no conceivable weapon use must be destroyed so it can only be sold for scrap salvage. Often companies will add the restriction when they sell expensive products to the government that they cannot be resold surplus. This is to protect the new value of the product. I remember showing up on an air force base once to claim the lot I won and saw brand new professional video tape recorders (studio grade) still wrapped in their productive plastic being crushed in a hydraulic press. I asked what they were doing as was told the items were being "de-militarized". In reality, Ampex (now defunct) stipulated that the government could not resell these VTRs. They did not want to see commercial grade VTRs flooding the market being sold for pennies on the dollar of new value.
Again, items which require "de-militarization" are clearly noted on the lot description so there will be no surprises. The other common practice that is annoying is to use a single item of value, such as a high performance spectrum analyzer to "salt" a lot of which the rest is useless junk. Thus a buyer who is interested in only the item of interest must take the who lot, saving the government the cost of disposing of the rest.
As others have mentioned, no shipping is available. You must pay for and remove the items which you won within a perscribed time. Failure to do so will result is suspending your ability to bid in future auctions.

It depends what you bid on and what those items were associated with. I won lots
in perhaps 20 auction "events" and IIRC had requests to return items from six or
seven. One item was a Tek 2230 scope. Apparently it had been used with some
weapons system and everything associated with the program was coded for grinding
up. Funny thing is that if you sell something they drop the matter but if you
restore something and keep it they will demand it back. I suppose you could lie
about it but I didn't. None of these items were coded as requiring "de-mil,"
this was all after-the-sale change of status.

If you don't pick items up on time they will keep calling you and be flexible,
but eventually will sell the stuff off as scrap or otherwise dispose of it. This
happened to me once when business travel kept me from driving to pick up a
rather large lot of exotic gyro gear which would have cost me FAR more than I
paid to have shipped.

Their photos and description usually leave a lot to be desired. If you want to
do this on a regular basis you really need to go to the place twice; first to
inspect then later to pick up and move yourself. Also beware that they pull
switches on you where what you get is not the item you bid on, and that there is
very specifically no recourse that you have against them. I've met some good,
decent people at some of the govliquidation places but some others were flat out
nasty, with one destroying a mint 485 (cracked CRT, caved in case) by slamming
it against the floor because I was an hour late for my pickup appointment (late
airline flight). Like I said, no recourse.

Which site smashed your scope?? I have picked up at Lockbourne, OH so far. Seemed easy going.

If I saw one of the employees do that, I think his head would follow the scope's treatment. That is just uncalled for.

seven. One item was a Tek 2230 scope. Apparently it had been used with some
weapons system and everything associated with the program was coded for

up. Funny thing is that if you sell something they drop the matter but if you
restore something and keep it they will demand it back. I suppose you could lie
about it but I didn't. None of these items were coded as requiring "de-mil,"
this was all after-the-sale change of status.

If you don't pick items up on time they will keep calling you and be flexible,
but eventually will sell the stuff off as scrap or otherwise dispose of it.

This

happened to me once when business travel kept me from driving to pick up a
rather large lot of exotic gyro gear which would have cost me FAR more than I
paid to have shipped.

Their photos and description usually leave a lot to be desired. If you want to
do this on a regular basis you really need to go to the place twice; first to
inspect then later to pick up and move yourself. Also beware that they pull
switches on you where what you get is not the item you bid on, and that

there is

very specifically no recourse that you have against them. I've met some good,
decent people at some of the govliquidation places but some others were flat

out

nasty, with one destroying a mint 485 (cracked CRT, caved in case) by slamming
it against the floor because I was an hour late for my pickup appointment (late
airline flight). Like I said, no recourse.

VTRs. They did not want to see commercial grade VTRs flooding the market

being

sold for pennies on the dollar of new value.
Again, items which require "de-militarization" are clearly noted on the lot
description so there will be no surprises. The other common practice that is
annoying is to use a single item of value, such as a high performance

spectrum

analyzer to "salt" a lot of which the rest is useless junk. Thus a buyer who
is interested in only the item of interest must take the who lot, saving the
government the cost of disposing of the rest.
As others have mentioned, no shipping is available. You must pay for and
remove the items which you won within a perscribed time. Failure to do so

will

result is suspending your ability to bid in future auctions.

I've read about destruction of sensitive equipment once, they even
accounted for the possibility of information burnt into the screen, in
which case the CRT was supposed to be smashed....

Oh well, and here I was going to buy that military hospital, better not
then.... ;-)

One should be warned about government auctions- if, down the road,
someone decides that the items should not have been sold for whatever
reason, they will come asking for you to return them. Many stories have
been told here in the past. I dodged the bullet, and will no longer buy
from any of these auctions regardless of how good the deals are.
