OT.(slightly) Telequipment D55A Z mod

While not a true Tek scope like all my old 500 series I understand it was a British sorta relative. I found one locally, and was wondering if anyone on the group had experience with one, and was it a true dual beam scope, not dual trace. Has it got any neat features to make me want to add it to my growing collection? It was among some pieces of gear that the wife of an old Tek employee was disposing of. He worked field service and travelled to europe quite often in the 60's and early 70's. I bought some Tek equipment from her and wanted to make her an honest offer for it, but didn't need another orphan project. I did find a partial manual on line, but wanted to see if anybody in the group was familiar with them. Was there an actual tek/ Telequipment association at any time? I seem to recall my Tektronix sales rep in Boston many years ago, offering to sell me a Telequipment scope (1969 or 70) to save me some money. It is kind of rough, and has been in a closet right near the shore for at least 15 years unused.
So, any ideas as to desirability and a fair price? I need another tube type scope like I don't know what, but I'm a sucker for quality test equipment,as are most of us on this group! This lady did sell me a Tek 310 missing all the tubes and some front panel controls for $2.00, since I needed the outside covers which will go on my 310A. My wife says I'm soon to be forbidden to accumulate more, unless I cull the herd and get down to a more reasonable sized collection, (unless the deal is too good to pass up!) LOL Aren't they all? Thanks for any help, Jeb Brygider KE7LIU Washington state.

Hi..

The Telequipement scopes were afik 100% UK in origin in the early days.

Tek bought into them I think, to get a legitimate foothold in the UK. I
don't know the full story details, but certainly when I was there in the
late 70's, though we supplied and serviced Tek and TQ equipment from the
same site, they were seperate product lines. The Tek 5000 series
scopes, being a sort of cross over design.

Some of them were realy good bits of kit, some were, err.. "Somewhat
less so"...

I remember a couple of the Tek specialists, used to have a sort of
comtpetition some days, to see how many of the little Telequipment
Service-Scopes they could repair, while something else warmed up prior
to calibration.

Ah.. Those were the days.. "Propper" calibrations performed, not just
an expensive pass/fail test, with no record of any test/check results.

Cheers.

Dave Baxter.
Ex Tek UK, Harpenden and Maidenhead.

Hi Jeb:
Tek bought the Telequipment company and sold both Tek and Telequipment items. This gave Tek an opportunity to build products in the UK on the Island of Guernsey. Tek also had a factory in Holland.
The catalog that I have shows that Telequipment was founded in 1953 and by 1966 had become the largest UK oscilloscope manufacturer and the world leader in the low-cost oscilloscope field. It was in 1966 that the two companies were joined. The D63 was a dual beam and the DM63 was a dual beam storage scope. This catalog does not show a D55A but it may be listed in a later catalog.
A few weeks ago, I had a Pizza party with two of the founders of Telequipment who now live in the Beaverton, Oregon area. Both are nice gentlemen and could supply us with more history and information.

Thanks Deane, It sure would be nice to pin this one down. I downloaded all the available Telequipment catalogs starting with catalog #2 1968, thru 1973 TOTAL OF 5 CATALOGS, AND NO REFERENCE TO a D55A Z mod. I did find a partial manual for the D55, which tells me it is a true dual beam tube, but no mention of the Z mod. It does say some info re: the ability to intensify the beam intensity on channel 1 from an event on channel 2. This I assume might explain the Z mod since I always thought Z info was denoted by changes in beam intensity. Strange that they mention the concept in the manual, but no info as to the mod. It seems strange that all the catalogs I found don't mention this particular scope at all. Perhaps it was a pre Tektronix model that never made the switchover. Anyhow it sure has my curiosity stoked up. Usually there were two main reasons for a product to be left out of a product line. 1: it was too expensive to produce and make reliably function, or 2: it was a complete dog and just drove service techs crazy! LOL. It would be great to ask the 2 gentlemen from Telequipment if they recall this particular model. I have so many real Tek items on my bench to make right before I get sidetracked, but I might just have to get this one for further fun and games. I guess, as my kids say, dad, you're just a dinosaur! Anyway, I hope all of us dinosaurs are around to enjoy these beautiful products for many years to come. I now have over 20 Tektronics 500 and 300 series scopes plus plug in mainframe power supplys, and several additional Tek products. Soon I'm going to make a list and post it on the site. I used my first Tek scope at IBM components Div. in Fishkill New York in the early 60's and fell truly in love with the perfect technology. They still thrill me as they used to, but so do many of my old boatanchor radios. Thanks for your continued support of the Tek group. One of these days, I need to drive down to Oregon and get to meet you. Stan also. Thanks again Dean, I'll keep digging! Jeb KE7LIU

Hi Jeb,

?

Just found this old email in my trash bin and thought I would make a couple of comments on it.

?

Yes, Telequipment did have an official connection to Tek in the early 70¡¯s.? Tek bought the U.K. based Telequipment company as a quick and easy way to enter the ¡°low cost¡± market for scopes.? I was a Sales Engineer for Tek at the time in the Boston area and, like all the other Tek Sales Engineers I knew at the time, we thought it was a MISTAKE!? Customer expectations for anything Tek sold (including Telequipment stuff) were VERY high but the TQ stuff just wasn¡¯t up to it.? Eventually (about two years later), Tek closed Telequipment and discontinued the line.

?

You got a good deal on the 310 but by now, I suspect you have discovered that the cabinet parts are not interchangeable between the 310 and the 310A . . .

?

Stan
