Tek Parts and CRT's

walter shawlee

We have a lot of Tek parts and CRT's from 7000/5000 series and some
4xx series portable scopes. Happy to sell, swap and trade bits if
it will help get everybody's gear up and running, and we have a VERY
BIG surplus pile. We are always looking for 2xxx series CRTs and
parts.

we have tek parts cross-reference data both on line and in paper if
you need it, you can see the on line portion by going to our web
site, and following the trail to the test equipment portion.

all for now,
walter

I was seeing a lot of recyclers on You Tube just scrapping out some Tektronix scopes for the gold, they were a 7000 and 2440 scopes. Saying the scopes couldn't be fixed, and this was in England or Europe. I don't think that these people know what scare parts the Tek made IC's and hybrids are. I was just crying my eyes out with him cutting the cables to get the boards out. He was just salivating over the gold on the Tek made ICs that he could deplate and get the cost of the gold . The parts are worth more us Technicians than the gold that is reclaimed. To bad you guys can't get more of these older scopes from these recyclers, to get these hard to get parts. Not only the Gold parts but the hard to get other parts like Transformers, Tek made resistors, ceramic strips, CRTS. Soon lots of these parts scopes will be scrapped. Hope you can save these, and let the recyclers know not junk them out, and let you know about them.

It is a rare "recycler" that recognizes the value of the equipment. In
fact, they really can't, otherwise they couldn't sell it/scrap
it/destroy it.

The only thing that "they" will respect is value (called $$$) which
means that if they can sell a scope/plugin for the value of the
materials (mostly gold, but also aluminum), then they have an excuse
to do so, but ONLY if the compensation for not scrapping the
plugin/scope compensates them for the extra effort needed to actually
sell it.

Packing, shipping, advertising, warranty (?), well.....

extra dollars.

It's basically a dollar driven situation, and you have to get in, if
possible, before the vultures land next to the scope and start pecking
for gold.

It is easy to say that the parts are valuable, but actually
storing them, and inventorying the parts is a daunting task
that greatly exceeds what you guys are willing to pay, for
the individual parts.

You have to have a pretty low standard of living to cover
the costs, let alone make a living, selling parts to old scope
lovers.

While the infamous Deane Kidd was doing it, he had full salary
or full retirement from Tektronix, was living in a state (Oregon)
where there was no income tax, no sales tax, and no inventory
tax on small businesses. Everything was stored in a house
that was paid for, on a farm that was paid for.

For him it was a hobby that paid beer and bait money at best.

If you want these old scopes not to be scrapped, and are
personally affronted by the fact that they do get scrapped,
then it really is up to you to start buying them up whenever
you see them and storing them on your dime.

Me personally, I have 4 pallets of old 7000 series scopes,
and plugins, that sit in storage because I hate to scrap them.

The economics today is I can get more for the gold in the
back plane of one 7000 series scope than anyone would offer for
the whole frame.

When I last offered them up for sale it became a cherry pitting
contest: you want the cherries, and to leave me with the pits.

I know it is hard to believe, when you aren't doing the work,
but I can't afford to clear the way for the forklift to hoist
the pallet off the 3rd shelf up, unrap all of the protective shrink
wrap, and unstack the scopes, just to see if you want a frame
for $50.

So they sit. Along with a pallet of 453/454 scopes. If the
economy tanks, gold skyrockets, and I need to eat, they will be
scrapped.
