How Many Scopes?
Without actually knowing anything, I now have two 2445B's, one 2465, and just now a 2445 plus the cute little SC501 that fits in a TM case.? The first 2445b was bought to use, then the second because it worked well on all but channel one whose attenuator hadn't been adequate for oomph of whatever Bozo plugged it into. I had one of our colleagues re-cap the power supply, change the NVRAM for a FRAM, and replace the leaking SMD caps and fix the damage they'd done. This scope is now VERY nice.
Now I had a really good 2445B and the second one which also now has FRAM and better caps on A5, but whatever PS caps were in it. It works ok manually but the Parametric functions don't work. It was a lab scope so footless, no handle,? and missing those nice rubber things on the rear. So fool that I was I thought I'd buy just those things ..... hah, hah, hah - cheaper to buy a parts scope which is where the 2465 came from. Someone had let it down a bit ungently on the time knob, destroyed the knob and broke the VAR pot shaft.? I was able to find a complete right-side panel on ebay and when it replaced the bad one all was well and the scope worked nicely although the trace could lose a bit of weight. I also discovered that the shaft on the trace-intensity knob had also been there for the great fall, so it was replaced and now the thing is perfect, more or less. Thinking that no rational person needs so many scopes I offered it to the local university science dept who had mentioned to me that they needed a good analog scope - Voila they would get the 2465. But then when I was cleaning it up, I decided to keep it. There was a 2445 cheap on Ebay which allegedly needed repair. It didn't and it is really nice - so FAU gets that one. And its trace is really fine. So I'm back to where I was at the end of last week with too many scopes. Most of the problem seems to be with "parts" scopes.? If I got one that actually didn't work it would be what I'd expected, but the damn things keep showing up with nothing serious wrong with them. And I cannot bring myself to scrap a working scope.? I doubt if any of you can either. What am I missing? |

Hi Harvey, I¡¯m actually up to my ears with other projects and one of our members here in the US does terrific repairs and calibrations. This is probably not very smart but I compared the measurement I get on the other scopes to the calibrated one and find them pretty close, certainly close enough for what I do. Best regards, john |

Let S = the number of 'scopes that one currently owns. Let D = the number of 'scopes that one acquires in the next 24 hour period that one buys one or more 'scopes. Let T = the number of 'scopes that one would deem to be "too many". Then T = S + D + 1. T, of course, increments every time one buys one or more 'scopes. QED. What Craig, no 24**'s ??Got to draw the line somewhere. My long-suffering wife already points out that there is a fine dividing line between collecting and restoring Tek gear and mental illness ;-) Oh - almost forgot my "handbag" scope - a lightweight four channel 60MHz Tek 2004B. fixer candidates) around the corner and maybe 4 or 5 5000 series in the other room. They include many 4xx series, a few 7000 mainframes and a few 24xx scopes. Also a 335 and a couple of 2xx scopes plus a couple of oddballs. About a dozen are fully operational and the rest are in the repair queue or parts donors. So no, I don't think you can specify an upper limit. And, I have it on good authority, that I'm perfectly normal. I just got a 2465b the other week. I will be thinning the herd, although I really hate shipping. Even when pared down, I think I'll be left with around a dozen or so. Well, maybe more if I'm honest. This thread is therapy to me... thank you John....
My first scope 20 years ago: Hameg 604 Then a couple years ago I got infected by the "CRO" virus, it's getting out of hand I fear... 2232 5111A 2215A TDS 544A TDS 310 317 my first "glowing" Tek, just finished its restoration 317 another one 317 yet another 317 fourth and last one I promise !... ^^ 310A 531A 502 502A just started its restoration 515A - just bough, awaiting delivery Fluke/Philips " Combiscope " - also just bought, awaiting delivery And I want a TDS380, a TDS 784D and a 694C, and a 585 or 545 or 535, and 2467B, and a 2236, and also a TDS 224 and a Tek 222 or 224, and a old Metrix scope, the ones I had at school back in the day, oh I would like one of these portable/isolated Fluke scopes as well. The list is non exhaustive of course.... Vincent Trouilliez |
Glad I'm not the only one with this illness.

I hope I can add it to the rest of working scopes. I want to add a 475, something tubed and a higher end 24xx series. I love this hobby and the people involved. |
Lop pol, I was going to say at least no vacuum tubes except the CRT, but you said you want one (or two, or more).? Personally, I don't see why you would want a tube scope.? I mean, tubes are great for audio and guitar amplifiers, but why mess around with shack-heating fire bottles?? My preference is for 7000 and 5000 series solid-state scopes, although I do own an HP 54504A DSO because they were throwing it out at work.

Maybe if you used a tube scope back in the old days?? I used to have an HP 8566 spectrum analyzer, an 8350B sweeper, and 8494 and 8495 step attenuators back 25+ years ago at work, and now I have them all in my garage lab.? Had a Tek 2465B as well, but the knob and button lag drove me crazy, so I have no? intention of buying one now.? I sure would like a CSA803 again, but working on those digital beasts is such a pain.? Oh well. I too had to draw the line somewhere, and it was also with the portables.? Somewhere north of 80, with no 2xxx or 4xx scopes.??
I almost bought a 535(I think) plus cart, CA, 1L10 and 1S2 for $35 at an estate sale a month ago, but another guy bought it out from under me (almost literally!- I was going to buy it, but noticed that the right cover was lifted and a tube was missing.? I was in the process of pulling the panel to see if it had been completely harvested, when the guy told the seller right behind me that he'd take the whole thing.? He just spoke before I thought to, and I didn't feel like arguing.)? ?He turned around the 1L10 and 1S2 on ebay for $199.99 about 3 weeks ago.? I got a nice 1L5, W, O and 1A6 from the same sale.? The former owner was a ham and experimented with TV, but his garage must have been regularly damp because much of the hardware has developed the white "fuzz".?? The type W is labeled as being "modified for station B".? It's not clear what that means; I initially thought that the B input had been routed to the A channel, but I don't see any evidence of that.? I have so many projects, it could be quite a while before I "get round tuit" -Dave From: Craig Sawyers <c.sawyers@...> To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, December 6, 2018 3:08 PM Subject: Re: [TekScopes] How Many Scopes? As far as scopes goes, I'm at 4 but that is by no means the end of the story.? ?I'd like a 7854 to put my sampling plug-ins in and average out the noise and jitter, a CSA803 or 11801-11803 for 20 GHz+ sampling, parts mule 7603, 7854, 5110, HP 54504A,? and 7904, and maybe a USB DSO for the portability.? ?Maybe a 485 or 2465B/2567 to have a nice high-BW analog scope.?
