If it were me, I'd have already gone and picked it up. Finding a 547 with the proper Scopemobile is pretty rare. Finding one with a Scopemobile and a bunch of plug-ins, including two 1A4s, is even more rare. Maybe even unheard of these days.

IMHO, the 547 is not just another "500-series 'scope". It is a very fine 'scope. Many of Jim Williams applications notes were documented using photos from his 547; it was probably the main 'scope on his bench. $100 is ridiculously inexpensive for that set up.

from Maine to look at it today and then there are some other people on his list. I'm in in the queue after them, but not to buy for myself. Another member of this group asked if I could grab it for him. It's the least I can do given how I've personally benefitted from the generosity of this group (in terms of gear and expertise). Good. I have a special place in my heart for these old pieces of gear. I hate to see any one of them scrapped and destroyed. Had a fellow drop off a couple 561A 'scopes sans the plug-ins a couple years ago. Common as grass, these things were in awful condition, handles worn away, dents, and encrusted with grime, tar, and nicotine.... and they still worked.

Got one on the bench now. In the next couple days I will spray it down with Simple Green and hose it off. Blow it dry, and set it over the register for a week or so. Watch out with that Simple Green!!? ?I used it on a scope cart and while it got the cart nicely cleaned, it definitely softened the paint.? ?I washed it off soon enough there was no damage, but I would be really wary about using that stuff on the scope itself.? Try detergent and water first.? And a little soft scrubbing.? And gentle application of alcohol for the tough spots.? I wouldn't use strong things that you might not be able to get out of the nooks and crannies later.

I have tested Simple Green pretty extensively on my Tek gear for the last six years or so, and have had zero issues. The trick is to NOT let it sit and soak. If left on too long, the first thing one notices is that it starts to eat away at the lettering on the chassis. My "bench" 'scope, a 564B Mod 121N, was cleaned with the stuff about 5 years ago, and I have noticed no problems or deterioration.

Over the years, I have tried different soaps and detergents, mostly dish types, and have found that they are pretty poor at removing the built up residue from tobacco smoke. Too, oily, greasy accumulations around the fan motors and rear of the chassis, such as my 545B had, proved almost impervious to removal without soaking and pretty vigorous mechanical actions. Soaking, is not an option, as the longer the unit stays wet, the greater the chance of water ingress into places that it is difficult, or impossible, to get out. Whenever I clean any of my Tek stuff, speed is the key. Spray on the cleaner, apply a soft bristle (hog hair) to loosen, and then a quick rinse. Gentle blowing with air, then a significant amount of time either on a furnace register (unit is covered with old towels to retain heat, yet breathe), or in the oven (plug-ins, and the spouse is not around :D) on the lowest setting, around 160 degrees. Cleaners such as Fantastik, 409, and the ones containing significant percentages of citrus, attack not only the lettering, but the aluminum itself, often quite aggressively. I have also discovered that in some cases, and depending upon the grime, about any cleaning solution/water, will begin to remove the lettering. My theory is that some of oils and chemicals these old devices are exposed to has already began to break down the ink. The cleaner, and/or water, just accelerates a chemical action already started. cleaning aluminum airplanes a number of years ago. The problem is it wicks into joints, and under rivets, where it sits and corrodes. There is a new formulation just for aluminum: Simple Green 13406, Extreme Aircraft and Precision Cleaner... Thank you Chuck, I was not at all aware of the warning. Will source the preparation before I tackle any more equipment. You bring up a good point about anodize too. Most of my working career has been as a toolmaker (learned electronics in the U.S. Navy in the 1970s), and anodizing aluminum is a great way to decrease corrosion.
