As I recall, the implosion shields are usually polycarbonate which is much stronger than acrylic (i.e. Plexiglass).

I made one from a piece of blue acrylic I had on hand. It was either 1/16" or 1/8" thick. I don't remember but I think it was 1/16" Quite easy to make with a table saw and a sharp carbide
