Re: Problems with recently un-stored 549
The "bloom" would normally result in the trace getting larger due to
reduced HV potential as the supply dies, not smaller as you report.
It would certainly be worth watching the screen voltage for

I think we're talking to the same end from different directions here. My initial description of the fade-out did not include the "bloom" because at that time I did not notice it, it happens very

I missed the part where you say it matches the symptoms. Here
are the symptoms you wrote:

Re: Flashing a CRT filament?
Hello Marvin,
Did you see this page at the "The Valve Page" website?
Ihttps://www.thevalvepage.com/teletech/crt_oc/crt_oc.htm
It doesn't give a direct indication of how much stored energy is required

Re: Problems with recently un-stored 549
If you look a bit, you will see that I am all over that thread.
Blooming is because when the HV drops, it reduces its potential
force to accelerate electrons... the electron beam slows down.

From your earlier post: "This will cause the beam to slow down, which will show up as the trace expanding on both the horizontal and vertical direction." That describes the trace fade-out to a T, a

Re: Qservice Website Upgrade Introductory Discount
My first question (i'm sure there will be many more, your site looks immensely useful) is whether you take requests to track down rare Tek birds? I've been scrounging the 'net for an HV xfrmr for a

Again, the symptoms you are describing do *NOT* indicate a bad
HV transformer... but by all means replace it anyway.

Re: Problems with recently un-stored 549
Thanks for the feedback. I've managed to track down one Tek HV xfrmr for the 549 (PN 120-0423-00), no idea its provenance or condition, it may be as lossy as that in my 'scope given its age. I did

Flashing a CRT filament?
Does anyone know or has anyone ever flashed a filament in a CRT? What voltage did you use? Capacitor, how big?
I know that it sometimes does not work but it is worth a shot anyway. Pins are

The (aural) pictures in the radio soundtrack were superb and made excellent use of the medium; that is still true 40 years later. Best watched in a dark room :)

Can I suggest that you take the helpful suggestions on how to improve the gentleman's web site off list in direct email to Q-Service rather than tie up bandwidth here?

Re: Problems with recently un-stored 549
If the HV transformer is leaky, the HV will drop as the
transformer heats up. This will cause the beam to slow
down, which will show up as the trace expanding on both

yep.
