Re: 54 CA, to fix it or not to fix it, that is the question
Number 1 sounds like more fun. If I remember right I think I have a 53/54C out in the storage shed Leon Robinson ?K5JLR

Hi Dave, I don't see any unintended question marks in your last two posts. Thanks, Barry - N4BUQ

Re: Extraneous question marks
It didn't help. Sorry group, I guess from now on I'll have unintended question marks here and there. Bear with me. Dave Wise ________________________________ Sent: Monday, February 22, 2021 1:55 PM

I forgot to say I'm using Outlook Web App.? I changed Settings|Options|Settings|Message Format from HTML to Plain Text. Let's see if it helped. Dave Wise ________________________________ Sent: Monday,

Re: Rather than a TM500 module extender....
I agree with Walter, the TM502 power supply block is ideal for both single width and double width plug ins. I switched over to the TM502 after blowing up a DC502 with an improperly inserted test

Re: 2N3904 B-E junction as fast diode substitute?
The other useful property of a reverse biased BE "zener" is that it's usually noisier than a real zener. I have used them very successfully that way in random number generator applications.

Re: 2N3904 B-E junction as fast diode substitute?
Heathkit generally implemented low-voltage, low-capacitance clamps with transistors in reverse avalanche mode, with bases floating. I can't recall ever seeing them use a version with the bases tied to

Re: 2N3904 B-E junction as fast diode substitute?
Heath used this trick as input protection clamping in some of their scopes, worked like a champ.

Re: Transformation TR503 into TR502
Yes, I remember using the TR502 in lower resolution settings, the need to set fine frequency adjustment. Set to zero span first and move the fine adjust for max response. -----Mensaje original-----

Re: 2N3904 B-E junction as fast diode substitute?
Dennis is right about the transistor characteristics suffering in reverse B-E breakdown. If you do commit a Q as a Zener, keep it that way, and avoid breakdown in transistors that are used in high

Re: Transformation TR503 into TR502
As the XOs warm up, they drift a bit. Check any mods or tweaking of their frequencies after they're stabilized. You're in the home stretch now - almost to the finish line. Ed

Re: Transformation TR503 into TR502
Thanks Ed, I opened this new post because the other one was a bit too long and dispersive. I re-calibrated the four cavity BPF filter using the nanoVNA V2_2 by connecting it to the 2nd LO input of the

Re: 2N3904 B-E junction as fast diode substitute?
You are correct about 4 to 5V being the magic zero TC. That wasn't my point. In 1970 the reverse B-E junction cost less than 1/20th of a Zener diode. No need to use reverse junctions today. Zener's

54 CA, to fix it or not to fix it, that is the question

Re: 2N3904 B-E junction as fast diode substitute?
A reversed E-B junction is approximately a Zener in breakdown. Silicon transistors tend to have about the same reverse E-B breakdown near 5-7 V, regardless of size. There's a low level clamping

?I seem to recall that the degradation takes the form of low beta at microamp currents. I hope that's all it does, because at certain settings, my HP 740B's zener a 2N3053 switch 20000 times a second.
