Re: insurance

I would not forgo at least liability insurance.? Had a guy on our airport who did have insurance on his Taylorcraft when it got away from him on landing.... he ran over an intersection sign and half of the VASI lights..... $56,000 paid for by insurance.??

Think about it carefully.? By the way, he was denied insurance after that.... but he did finally get a quote. $7,300 for a year.? He's not flying now.

I just bought my Tailwind, and insurance was a whole lot more than expected. It was about $1800 for the year, and they wanted me to get a 1 hour check out. Problem was, it took about two weeks for them to do the insurance process, so I had the Tailwind home, and about twenty hours experience in it, before it was even insured. I'm thinking of getting rid of insurance next year, and just fixing things as they break... I've had my Taylorcraft for ten years now, and haven't had anything happen that I'd get a claim for. I'm not willing to give away my airplane in the first place, and have been able to fix things so far, and I feel like I'm wasting a ton of money for something I'm never going to use.

I'm in the process of buying the Schultz tailwind that has been on Barnstormers. I just got a quote for the insurance. Aside from it costing a lot more than I expected, they are requiring a one hour?checkout in make and model. Has anyone else encountered this issue before? The airplane is being sold by the son of the now deceased builder, but the son, although a pilot, has no taildragger experience and I don't believe he is an instructor. I am an instructor and I have probably 6 or 7000 hours of tailwheel?time. I just don't have any in a tailwind. Do many people just self insure these days? It seems that USAIG is not making it easy for us who fly little airplanes.
