Re: insurance

Bob, I'm about 135 lbs soaking wet, so W&B should not be an issue. I think I have a closer option to get some tailwind time if we can manage to mesh schedules. That being said, I would like to visit with you about flying. Can you give me a call at 620-664-7844?

Brian,

Do you have to be PIC for the hour in a Tailwind (can you be acting as non-PIC CFI)?? If CFI works I am willing to pay you for a BFR assuming we both fit in my airplane and you come to Abilene TX.? Are you under 175#?

I am in Hutchinson, Kansas about 45 miles NW of Wichita. I am trying to get a more specific reading from my insurance agent as far as what they require. I have flown several ag planes and sailplanes that required a "checkout" even though the aircraft was a single place. The insurance company was usually happy as long as you just talked to someone who knew the aircraft, but they obviously didn't require a CFI to give dual in those situations. So, I am hoping that they might be somewhat lenient as long as I make some effort to get some sort of training in it. The insurance?agent suggested that I just go around the patch a few times with the previous owner. In this case that is not an option since the builder passed away some time ago.?The?plane is being sold by his son who does not have a tailwheel endorsement.

That being said, I have only ridden in a tailwind once and didn't really do anything like slow flight, stalls, or any landings. I would feel a lot better about flying this new-to-me airplane 700 miles back to Kansas if I had at least a little bit more time in one, even if it was not with a CFI.

Brian, have you met Keith Klos? Keith is a Tailwind builder and pilot with over 1000 hrs Tailwind time AND he is a CFI. Not sure how far you¡¯re willing to travel but Keith would be an option for a check ride.?
I am required to inform you that I may receive a cold Spotted Cow from Keith for referring you to him.?

I'm in the process of buying the Schultz tailwind that has been on Barnstormers. I just got a quote for the insurance. Aside from it costing a lot more than I expected, they are requiring a one hour?checkout in make and model. Has anyone else encountered this issue before? The airplane is being sold by the son of the now deceased builder, but the son, although a pilot, has no taildragger experience and I don't believe he is an instructor. I am an instructor and I have probably 6 or 7000 hours of tailwheel?time. I just don't have any in a tailwind. Do many people just self insure these days? It seems that USAIG is not making it easy for us who fly little airplanes.
