Re: upcoming total lunar eclipse
Yes, not many venues are going to be wiling to stay open to host an observing party the night/morning of this lunar eclipse. That is why I am thinking of activities BEFORE the eclipse that would run before the eclipse date and at times that libraries and planearia run by sane humans are open. We are going to have a special program at the Stars2Stem planetarium on Saturday, March 8th at 2pm on the March 13-14 total lunar eclipse. In it, I'll discuss why lunar eclipses happen, when they happen and show the night sky on the 13-14 and show the eclipse, plus give out info on when to look on March 14th, suggestions for good viewing on their own at home. Maybe, I will also talk a bit about using binoculars to view this eclipse and other interesting celestial objects. This will be a daytime program. I am going to contact Waterford and Eat Lyme libraries to see if they too would like to do a similar type of program on either the Sunday, Monday or Tuesday before the eclipse. At the libraries, I would do the presentation using PowerPoint and Stellarium, but if the program occurred at about 5:30p.m.?? it should be dark enough to see the Moon rising. In which case, would any of you be interested in setting up a scope or binoculars to look at the Moon during and after the presentation? Re: upcoming total lunar eclipse
I doubt even the best library, or school publicist could muster a crowd for some 2AM observing, even with our fine TAAS personalities.
The public could be better served by a poster or internet infographic saying where and when to look from their homes. Also, there¡¯s a partial solar eclipse at Sunrise on Saturday the 29th.? Not sure if we can drive into Harkness, but there are great views to the east from Pequot Ave. in New London.? Mark |

upcoming total lunar eclipse
Hi All, As you know, here is a total lunar eclipse that will be visible here in CT occurring late in the evening on March 13 into the early hours of March 14th.
Does the club have any outreach plans for this event? I do not think Conn College will be doing any lunar viewing for the eclipse as it occurs during their spring break. Because of that, I was thinking of contacting the Waterford and East Lyme libraries to see if they would be interested in hosting events. If they are, are any of you up for bringing your 'scopes out to such an event? The timing of this eclipse is not ideal for public viewings, as the partial phase begins at 1:09a.m. and the total phase doesn't start in SE CT until about 2:25 a.m. on Thursday morning. Totality ends at after 3a.m. My guess is that no library is going to host an event for the actual eclipse, but they might host events during their operating house or early evening to talk about lunar eclipses in general and help people prepare to watch the eclipse on their own from homes. Any interest in doing something for this eclipse, either before the actual event when we might be awake or on the wee hours of the 14th? Thanks, Leslie -- Leslie F. I came away with the same thoughts, George. More data, mom!! And now I want to learn more about Enigma Labs. You can see I am not going to get anything useful done :D? Re: TAAS and SAS
Then there was me coming to the picnic not even knowing I had the dreaded C word. Even though I wore a mask all the time except when shoveling food.? I just didn't know and still always wear one. Even meeting friends at Barnes and Noble Caf¨¦, we were the only 3 in the Cafe wearing masks - including the Cafe staff! Plus,? I don't or can't drink.

Re: TAAS and SAS
Jeff et al,
Thanks for checking on this and please don¡¯t make a decision based on my circumstances. In small venues I probably will be wearing a mask since I really don¡¯t want to come into contact with large groups of people I don¡¯t know. I¡¯m sure no TAAS member would come to a meeting sick, but when it comes to the general public, especially where alcohol is present, I don¡¯t think that¡¯s the case. Candidly, I¡¯ d rather wait for warmer weather and an outside or semi enclosed area. George |
