I am planning to hold a night sky viewing session at Nathan Hale Ray High School in East Haddam sometime in May, date TBD. Astronomy/physics class students will attend with their teacher, and possibly some parents. It is a great opportunity to introduce these students to the amateur astronomy hobby. Some will be heading off to college shortly and it is a great opportunity to spark an interest in the subject. I would like to keep this event small - just the students and several of us with telescopes (no attendees from the general public), so I don't plan to advertise this beyond the school. I will be doing livestacking, but ideally there will be a few different kinds of scopes/set-ups there to provide a good learning opportunity, including maybe a dob, night vision goggles (Mark?), smart telescopes/other livestacking set-ups and others. Just giving you an early heads up at this point if you might be interested. I am going to wait until the last minute to schedule this (maybe two days in advance) to be more sure of getting a clear night, so if you are interested stay tuned... more details to follow.

Wednesday, 10am to 2pm

Hi All,
The crane-lift of the old telescope OTA and pier/mount will be occurring tomorrow, Wednesday, 3.12,from 10am? to 2pm or so. From what I hear, there will be lots of media coverage, so the parking spaces near Olin and Hale may be completely?full.

Keep your finger crossed for no winds and a problem-free removal!

Best wishes to Bob Cimmino

Our kids just had two cars detailed by Bob¡¯s son Jeremy in Old Saybrook and said that he did a wonderful job. (Bob mentioned him when we were discussing cleaning the Conn College mirror).?

Jeremy noted that Bob has been having some health issues so I thought I¡¯d send some good vibes here. Bob, get better soon so we can do some observing!

March SoVerA Meeting
SOVERA MEETING MARCH 11, 2025

Join us for the March meeting of the Southern Vermont Astronomy Group this coming Tuesday, March 11, at 7:00 pm. The meeting is via ZOOM, here: https://zoom.us/j/94691230307#success

This month the talk will be by SoVerA board member Rick Bates. The topic is The Moon in Culture and the Arts. You might want to have pencil and paper at hand, as there will be a brief and entertaining test at the end. ?

Rick Bates has been a SoVerA member for many years and currently serves as vice president. His background is more in the arts than the sciences, so he won't overwhelm you with esoteric formulae and incomprehensible discussions of quantum mechanics.

Re: crane lift at Conn delayed

Thanks, Leslie; I'm interested.

crane lift at Conn delayed

Hi All,

For those who were interested in seeing this happen, the crane lift of the old 20-inch OTA and mount from the Olin dome has been postponed to next Wednesday, 3/12. If the weather is decent, the riggers?say they will arrive about 10am.

Thanks George.? That does help. Probably worthy of putting my new to me Sky-Watcher AZ-GTI and the Tele Vue TV-85 with the battery pack & tripod sling Mark recommended.? Be a good test. Better than me setting it up in the van and pressing GoTo and saying, hey that looks like it worked....

Re: TAAS Gigantaur Project

Jeff, Ima email you separately about a little 3D printer project.?

George, I love the land trust idea! Geoff and Alan might chime in? Re the LOL AshDome we salvaged years ago, it is sadly being used as a storage shed at Stellafane. It¡¯ll need some work but I¡¯m sure that we could move it again if a trust was interested¡
?
Thanks for the ideas, Jay

Re: TAAS Gigantaur Project

Jay:
OOOPS, one correction the optics are, as you correctly listed, an RC and not DK.

George

Re: TAAS Gigantaur Project

Jay:
While I do think your idea is a good one, and I am tied up for at least a year and a half with my home building project, there is another possibility. There are a couple of land trusts that could potentially have an observatory. Perhaps Geoff can bring us up to date on the one he works with, which has been talking about an observatory for some time now. The issues with transporting a beast like the 20 inch DK is not trivial. If one of the caretakers for the properties can find a way to get a dome ( like the one we disassembled in OL) they¡¯d be well on their way to a serious observatory. Anyhow, I hope we keep all options open and I¡¯m sure at least one will work out. Also, thanks for getting and storing the optics safely in EL.

George

That said, if 3D-printed parts are needed I can help there!

Re: TAAS Gigantaur Project

I think it's a grand idea but is certainly above my skill level.
This project requires skill and time, both of which I'm short of these days.? Not to mention I'm more of a home-depot returns kind of ATM'er.?
The linked telescope is oozing charm, I love the idea.
