Buying replacement parts for a 27

sidneycullison

Ahoy all,I have recently purchased a 1974 tartan 27 and am looking for
a replacement hatch(gel coat finish with clear fiberglass center)as
they are not avalible through Tartan only custom made teak hatches
which are very pricey.Does any-one know of any-one making these as
replacement parts for the tartan 27?Thanks for any information
everybody.Sidney

If you're talking about the forward hatch, and not the companionway hatch, I might be able to help you.?? I removed mine in favor of a Lewmar hatch, and I'm pretty sure I've still got it lying around somewhere.?? I'm sure it's not in tip-top shape but it might be a whole lot better than what you've got---or maybe yours is missing?? Where are you? ? Regards,? Ha Capt. Warren, yes I am looking for a forward hatch.I have just bought my boat(haven't brought to my home port yet)off the Tartans owners web site.Boat has one now but has had a solar vent installed?in it and the clear section has cracked?bad and leaks. And with having 800 miles of sailing to bring her home I would like to have it alittle more secured hatch or it could get nasty.Waterford Va sounds familiar as I am from Mathews Va but now live outside Savannah Ga.Tartan can build me a teak one for $800.00 but when you spend $4,500.00 for the whole boat with a diesel something just doesn't work there.Anyway thanks if you have one and it's not in bad shape let me know and we can work something out if you like.(whats funny is I can find new ones for pearsons, odays, catalinas, hunters and they are only $200.00)go figure.Oh the guy that with Tartan is also from
White Stone Va.Thanks Sidney

Hi Sidney----Well, I'm sorry to see another Tartan depart the Chesapeake; but home's where you drop your anchor, I suppose.?? I know for sure there's no vent cut into my hatch, but I'd be pretty sure it's scratched/crazed, probably original.?? I don't think there's much if anything wrong with the fiberglass; and perhaps the plexiglas is replaceable? ? I didn't waste much time on it because I knew I wasn't going to use it anyway.?? I think the hinges are still attached, too.??? Anyway, I'll check it and drop you a line over the weekend.??? BTW, Waterford is landlocked, in very Northern Virginia, in Loudoun County.?? Where in Matthews are you from??? Regards---?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I wouldn¡¯t focus too much on it being a $4500 boat.? The resale should be $13K to $18K depending on how nicely it¡¯s kept.? I paid $3K for mine with a supposedly dead diesel engine.?

?

It¡¯s also important to realize that there is no such thing as a money making boat.

?

I¡¯d recommend that you check your chain plates and rigging before you mess around with your hatch.? Push comes to shove you can wrap it in a tarp and close the hatch.? It won¡¯t be pretty but it will do pretty well.? You lose a chain plate or rigging with the sail up and you may lose the boat or at the very least the mast.

?

That said, Tartans are well built and the 27 is a tank.? Assuming the Diesel conversion was done well you shouldn¡¯t have much to worry about.? With a lower price boat I would make sure you didn¡¯t have a fool as a PO.? My PO had all sorts of unsafe and stupid things.? The water strainer was hooked up backwards¡. The cockpit drain had doubled up bicycle tubing instead of hose and pipe. The list went on and on.?

?

You basically want to spend some quality time looking around for potential trouble spots.? I¡¯d highly recommend keeping a current towing membership, a good anchor, a good vhf (or two), and a good bilge pump.? You can get out of most headaches with TowBoat US for $120/yr.? That may seem expensive, but I understand the hourly rate for tows in our area is $250.? I¡¯ve been towed in once in the last two years because my fuel filter clogged.? Speaking of which, you want to make damn sure you have extra filters with a cheap older boat.? No telling what is in that tank.? Mine wound up having a sponge some yahoo had stuffed in the fill.? The fuel tank by the way is Monel.? That¡¯s Pronounced MONEY from HELL¡ meaning that it is probably worth half the boat¡¯s value.? Monel is very very expensive.? It¡¯s in there for good, doesn¡¯t corrode.? Best material to make a tank out of.? There? is probably not a cleanout but there are baffles inside the tank.? It¡¯s about an 18 gallon tank and if your diesel is like mine you¡¯ll use about a pint an hour.? I have a 10hp diesel which is a tad undersized but functional for ? of hull speed.? A 20HP would consume roughly double the diesel.

?

Good luck and have a safe trip. Welcome to the club.

Brain, thank you for all your suggestions.Price did play a roll in buying the boat but the boat it's self had more to do with it. All the majors with the her are in?good??shape as she has been well maintained just needed a good cleaning and light painting.?Her?po loved her he?just ran out of time to keep her clean.I am having the mechanic that has serviced her in the past go over everything and service her diesel completely with new fluids, filters and fuel tank cleaning before she even moves?as this is not my first rodeo.I grew up with my family owning and running a marina and marine repair faucility on the chesapeake bay.(I still own the marina an old home place up there with my brothers)Also having worked for John Trumpy Jr.of Trumpy Yachts and Tom Colvin the famous sailboat designer and builder back in the seventies,I do know enought to ask others such as your self for advice and guildenace as you'll are more savy to this boat than myself.Your right about the hatch I just wanted to find one for the fact as she hits my home port she will be recieving a new coat of paint on her decks and I wanted the hatch to be painted at the same time so it would match.I will look into US Boats as you are right again on the towing it can get out of sight as I have been in the tow boats position and you are at?their mercey?of these people when your stranded,so any and all the suggestions, advice, and ideas you can give me I would be greatful for.Oh the picture of your boat, she looks like she a keeper.Fair sailing? to you, Sidney????

And here I go again having to praise my much loved Universal (Kubota) M3-20 (18hp).

At 1500rpm it's using less than a pint an hour. Which translates to 5kts thru the water in calm conditions.

Capt. Sidney, I've found my old hatch, and as expected, the fiberglass is in pretty good, not fantastic, condition, but the translucent part is shot---crazed, scratched, and actually broken.?? The good news is, that part is fastened in, and I presume quite replaceable.?? Would it be of any help to you?

Your venture sounds terrific from a refurber's standpoint, but I wonder if it isn't a little like the wine business:? How do you make a small fortune in the wine business??? Start with a large one.??? The concern is, that the cost of such refurb/resto-mods may bring the price a good deal higher than the (BUC) market will bear.?? I certainly know that all the labors I've performed, if compensated, would push the price of my boat way out of whack for a Tartan 27, if not out of reach. ?? That said, I absolutely love the idea. ? My cell number is 703-517-9090, but there's no way I'd be selling mine---too much blood, sweat, and tears invested, and the end is within view, anyway.?? Regards---Warren Stein

Capt Warren,Thanks for reply. To tell a long story short,I found a brand new old stock hatch in the box.The price stamped on the box $37.10 and thats all the guy charged plus shipping which was more than the part.He claims to have about 100 new old stock parts for the 27's as he was once a Tartan dealer and this is stock that Tartan didn't want back when he closed his dealership.(he's going to make alist of what he has)He does have 1 replacement rudder and center board but he knows what they are worth and?has them priced at market value.I have been looking?into buying a Pearson Countess to buy and live on we will see how it turns out.Theres a bunch of legal matters tied to the boat.Did you know where I?grew up at?A neat place to visit when cruising the bay.Well I thank you again for your kindness.Sidney?

Warren,I lived right across the creek from the yacht club(when I was with my father)on Stutts Creek and that was Mathews and my mothers place was in Redart on Stutts Creek (which I still own it has a small marina and shop with the house that is for sale) right inside the Hole in the wall.Actully my boat is from Mobil Al.and I will be sailing it back to Savannah.I am retired at an early age and am trying to have some good clean fun.(boats keep me out of trouble ha,ha)If you look at the for sale section at tartan the black 27 with the diesel motor thats listed for $5,000.00 is the boat I bought. If you have a number where you could be reached I would be glad to give you a shout, as I am still looking for some more 27's.This boat is going to end up being a show piece sort of as I am going start a business that takes these boats and kind of resto-mod them in keeping the classic design with todays techs.for resale to the public.Right now Tartan has 6 boats that they will give me,I just have to come get(have truck an trailor? and will ride) thats been given to them hoping Tartan would restore them but they have no interst in it but are willing to help me with the up-start?so I am going to take a stab at it.Again thanks and let me know. The good news is, that part is fastened in, and I presume quite replaceable.?? Would it be of any help to you?

The concern is, that the cost of such refurb/resto- mods may bring the price a good deal higher than the (BUC) market will bear.?? I certainly know that all the labors I've performed, if compensated, would push the price of my boat way out of whack for a Tartan 27, if not out of reach. ?? That said, I absolutely love the idea. ? My cell number is 703-517-9090, but there's no way I'd be selling mine---too much blood, sweat, and tears invested, and the end is within view, anyway.?? Regards---Warren Stein

Capt. Regards---?

If you're talking about the forward hatch, and not the companionway hatch, I might be able to help you.?? I removed mine in favor of a Lewmar hatch, and I'm pretty sure I've still got it lying around somewhere.?? I'm sure it's not in tip-top shape but it might be a whole lot better than what you've got---or maybe yours is missing?? Where are you? ? Regards,? Capt Warren,Thanks for reply. To tell a long story short,I found a brand new old stock hatch in the box.The price stamped on the box $37.10 and thats all the guy charged plus shipping which was more than the part.He claims to have about 100 new old stock parts for the 27's as he was once a Tartan dealer and this is stock that Tartan didn't want back when he closed his dealership.( he's going to make alist of what he has)He does have 1 replacement rudder and center board but he knows what they are worth and?has them priced at market value.I have been looking?into buying a Pearson Countess to buy and live on we will see how it turns out.Theres a bunch of legal matters tied to the boat.Did you know where I?grew up at?A neat place to visit when cruising the bay.Well I thank you again for your kindness.Sidney?

My boat is running fine and I do not have a specific need in mind but I will like to see the inventory when you get it.? I am assuming you may want to sell some of it.? My tach sometimes acts up so this may be a candidate for replacement.
