Problem #2
mp_leahy
I have ordered a new c/b from Tartan (ouch!) My next issue is that the
engine runs beautifully with no load...put her in gear and she dies, prop turns fine out of water, nothing tangled, can turn prop by hand. Waterpump leaks a bit and sprays a mist over intake... DUH, will repair pump and see if tranny works better. Looking for other thoughts. |

Check out Don Moyer's site on Atomic 4 (moyermarine.com).

It could be lack of compression in the engine pistons. Blown head gasket would cause that. It could also be that the engine isn't getting the proper among of gas. Gas pump? Filter? Check in with Don. Good luck. Paul --- In T27Owners@..., "mp_leahy" <mp_leahy@...> wrote:

I agree. I would check both compression and fuel.
If you don't have a compression gauge, then you can just pull all the plugs and place your thumb over the holes, one at a time while spinning the engine. Just that simple test will show you if one or more of your cylinders have low compression. My engine had been sitting for over a year, so when I first started it, it only had two cylinders firing right. It ran fairly smooth, but no power and wouldn't rev up. I squirted some Marvel Mystery Oil in the bad cylinders and tried again. After a while, I had compression in 3 cylinders. I didn't get compression in all four cylinders until I had the engine good and warm and had gone through three or four heating and cooling cycles. If you have a carburetor like mine, you'll also want to check the float and pin. It might be varnished and not working properly, so would need cleaning with GumOut or similar solvent. Good luck. --Bill #327 |
