Re: PERF

I have a Tartan 27. 1967. The windage difference is minimal IMO. The original rating is 234. I have a current rating of 254 from Galveston bay phrf. Probably a little more accurate for choppy bay and ocean racing. I race alot around here.
I will be doing the Harvest Moon regatta on October 25th. Galveston to Port Aransas.?

Greetings,

I raced my Tartan 27 Windfall, hull number 4 for many years on Lake Erie. My boat is a bolt on keel and of course a few hulls later Tartan changed to internal ballast and added 380lbs. I had a 170% Genoa in what was a total new Inventory at the time and paid a penalty for that sail but most of the Tartan 27 Owners here carried 170s. I won a lot of big prestigious races with my boat, both in PHRF and in our one design class. The one design fleet was really good fun. Anyway, my assigned PHRF rating was 225.?

Actually, it is my understanding that when S&S decided to make the T27-2 it was done such that both the T27-1 and 2 could still race together as a 1 Design class: same keel, rudder, rig and sail area.? I have not heard of both a T27-1 & racing together however.?
The early T27-1's were made pretty heavy layup which could easily have been adjusted in the later years of the T27-2 to accomodate the extra height of the deck on the T27-2 to make the final displacements similar enough.? I'm dont think that PHRF takes into account windage/wind resistance, but I'm not really a PHRF expert.? I just know that it is an imperfect rating system that works well enough.

Base rating for T27:? 234
Add +3 for a fixed 2 blade prop (not sure if 3 blade gives you more but it should)
Add +3 for roller furling
If I remember correctly, when we raced my T27 (#328) it was with a PHRF of 240 or more
With new sails we did ok in our non-spinnaker division

Does anyone have a perf number for the 27-2. It should be higher because of the increased weight and greater wind resistance from the raised coach roof.

Yes, Russ and I emailed a little in the years before?his death.?

Did you buy his boat in the Phillipines? And where is it now??

Russ put an appendage on the bow to keep breaking waves from covering the deck, is it still there? if so I'd love a photo.?

Russ probably sailed his T27-2 further than any other owner but he left little written record behind as far as I can find. john

Re: Diesel. Phrf rating

Yes , ratings do vary depending on what area you sail in.? In the Chesapeake Bay area, the base rating is 249 . Good luck with your race ! ?????? Ron s/v Hygelig

Ron: Tartan didn't install your?Yanmar, Russ Cobb did. After he made his Atlantic?crossing and spent time in the Black Sea, he returned to Europe and removed the original Farymann 1 cyl, 12 hp engine and replace it with the Yanmar you have now. John Garhart, T27-2, hull 668

Would anyone happen to know when Tartan first installed a Yanmar diesel in the 27-2 ??????????? Ron s/v Hygelig

Re: Diesel

Hi Robert ,???? Russ bought the Hygelig new and can find no records of any other engine ever being in the boat.? Came complete with manuals on all equipment on board. Still possible that engine had been changed.? As for rating , I saw somewhere that the 27-2 PHRF was 234.??????????? Ron??? s/v Hygelig

Re: Diesel

I have hull # 707, with a Yanmar diesel. i think it was an optional upgrade.

Re: Backing plate for port side winch

Various opinions about this, but I wouldn’t hesitate to remove the ice box. It is huge, right next to the muffler, and often leaks. We built a large storage cupboard in that spot and installed a small ac/dc Engel fridge in the quarter berth. Alternatively a good sized cooler would do the trick.?

Hello everyone.? I am almost done with my deck refinishing project.? One of the last things I need to do is re-bed the jib/genoa winches.? I have excellent access to install a backing plate on the starboard side as the quarter berth is directly below the winch.? Port side is another story.? My Tartan still has its cool box installed and it blocks access to that area.? My question to the group is this:? Will I be able to install a backing plate for the port side winch without removing the cool box?? I was thinking I might be able to reach it through the port side cockpit locker by cutting through the ply wood divider there.? Interested to hear your thoughts.

Re: Backing plate for port side winch

I looked at mine today. I agree. That seems to be to only way to get to it, without taking out the Icebox. I am super insulating the Ice box and dividing it into two sections. The inside and the outside. on the inside section I am installing a Homemade Peltier cooler under the inside part. I use the outside part a lot. And just recently I used the inside part as well.
