Too bad about the hauling damage. Let us know if you decide to build a new companionway hatch. We can get you dimensions, at least. hope you find another way, though. --Bill #327 --- In T27Owners@..., "chrisd4700" <chrisd4700@...> wrote:

Re: bigger issues
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThere is always a Tartan being scrapped somewhere.? You now need to hunt one down.? L? The companionway hatch is pretty hard to lose.? You might also post to Craigslist in the area where you think it was lost (each city) and see if some good Samaritan will look for it for you.? It¡¯s worth finding. ? I¡¯d instruct your trucker to put a rope across the front hatch to make sure you don¡¯t have a repeat¡¡? I¡¯d also have him look in the cockpit and make sure it isn¡¯t there.? There is a slim chance that it¡¯s in the boat and that whoever got the boat ready for transport took it off.? Call the yard and doublecheck.? The trucker sounds like a fool and may not have noticed the hatch missing in the first place. ? At any rate, your contract is for transport of the entire boat, not just some of it.? So you probably can hold them responsible for the missing component. |
Re: mast stepping

My mast was very close to the size of the opening, but despite that, I
used some tapered hardwood shims, trimmed just above the deck opening and tapped in from the top so any mast movement (along with gravity)would just make the shims tighter. I also left the boot in place, but moved it up slightly to get the shims in, then moved it back down. I did tape around the boot to help the sealing. --Bill #327 |

What bad luck about the sliding hatch (companionway hatch). I am not sure where you would get a replacement. You could call the folks at tartanparts.com and see what they have to say. Did your shipper secure your boat to the trailer or did you have any hand in that? It sounds as though a screw or 2 came loose somewhere that allowed the hatch to come completely off. I wonder if you can hold the shipper responsible for the cost of replacement? Sorry to hear about this. Caleb T27 #328 Odalisque -----Original Message-----

just hope it did not go through somebodies windshield & hurt them , cause if they have a smart lawyer they'll track you down via the hull # !!!!!!! , though likely they would go after the trucker co. & their ins. $$$$$$$$$$ , good luck & enjoy your boat !

From: chrisd4700 <chrisd4700@...> To: T27Owners@... Sent: Thu, Aug 23 4:30 PM Subject: [T27Owners] mast stepping Chris, We had our mast plucked out by a crane and ther were no wedges or anything like that at the deck where the mast pokes through to the hull. We have used rigging tape (white electricians tape etc) to tape off this joint of the mast and deck and it has worked quite well. The important thing to do is to tension your stays and shrouds so the mast is nicely supported and then to prevent rain water from flowing down the mast into the cabin/bilge. The tape around the gap prevents rain water from getting in and allows the mast to bend when under load. I think that rubber wedges would fall out when on different tacks in more significant wind. Also make sure that the mast foot is secure in the hull. Good luck. CalebD #327, Odalisque, 1967 -----Original Message----- From: chrisd4700 <chrisd4700@...> To: T27Owners@... Re: Problem #2

I agree. I would check both compression and fuel.
If you don't have a compression gauge, then you can just pull all the plugs and place your thumb over the holes, one at a time while spinning the engine. Just that simple test will show you if one or more of your cylinders have low compression. My engine had been sitting for over a year, so when I first started it, it only had two cylinders firing right. It ran fairly smooth, but no power and wouldn't rev up. I squirted some Marvel Mystery Oil in the bad cylinders and tried again. After a while, I had compression in 3 cylinders. I didn't get compression in all four cylinders until I had the engine good and warm and had gone through three or four heating and cooling cycles. If you have a carburetor like mine, you'll also want to check the float and pin. It might be varnished and not working properly, so would need cleaning with GumOut or similar solvent. Good luck. --Bill #327 |

Yes, they only have the small ones. I have a home made one for my
larger winches, and nicely done- extremely sturdy. I'm also just planning ahead and looking for spares. I can share some photos of the home-made one if anyone is interested.--Bill #327 --- In T27Owners@..., Bill Davis <backstay13@...> wrote: for my bronze sheet winches which is bigger than the ones they offer. that looks like it has winch handles very close to the size for my mast mounted halyard winches. Not sure if they're exact though. Need to measure again and probably call them. --- In T27Owners@..., "ackermwi" <back22@...> wrote:

Check out Don Moyer's site on Atomic 4 (moyermarine.com).

It could be lack of compression in the engine pistons. Blown head gasket would cause that. It could also be that the engine isn't getting the proper among of gas. Gas pump? Filter? Check in with Don. Good luck. Paul --- In T27Owners@..., "mp_leahy" <mp_leahy@...> wrote:

Problem #2
mp_leahy
I have ordered a new c/b from Tartan (ouch!) My next issue is that the
engine runs beautifully with no load...put her in gear and she dies, prop turns fine out of water, nothing tangled, can turn prop by hand. Waterpump leaks a bit and sprays a mist over intake... DUH, will repair pump and see if tranny works better. Looking for other thoughts. |

I am contemplating a centerboard rebuild. The steel has rusted andbulged the board. Would you update your experience for me? I like the idea of a factory board if they are made or a bronze replacement if practical. thanks Attached is photo of the presumably original centerboard from our1978 T27-2. Pivot hole at left, pennant hole at top middle. The cutaway sections were made to check on internal corrosion, of which there was plenty. The board was also badly delaminated near the corrosion. We bought a new centerboard from the factory, which is not yet installed. steel plate, as determined by sliding a strong magnet over the board. Note that there is no steel plate at the left end, which is basically the part of the board which stays in the centerboard trunk. My guess is the reason for no steel in that area is in the event of a very hard sideways grounding, it would be preferable to break the board rather than the hull and/or the centerboard trunk. Might be worth checking with the Tartan factory on this. hole.
