Looking for Russel Cobb on "Hygelig"
Matthias Klemm
Hello everyone,
My name is Matthias and I'm trying to find contact information for Russel Cobb. He has been (or still is) sailing his Tartan 27 named "Hygelig" around the world. Since I have similar plans I would like to contact him and see if he let's me pick his brain a little. Anyone know anything? Matthias Klemm "Carpe Diem" #484 currently at Green Cove Springs,FL |

Re: Used Centerborad

Armando, My cb was stuck, no, it was as if it had been bolted up. The rust expanded and pinched the board fast in its pocket. The yard pulled the pivot pin, tipped the forward end of the board down, drilled a hole, drove a bolt and levered it out. If your board works, than it is not in the same condition as mine was. The weak point?is where the pennant cable enters the board and attaches to the bushing. I asked Tartan what they do to prevent this point from allowing water and they replied, simply, that the bushing is glassed in.?I took this to mean that it remains a weak point that requires occasional examination. The upside is that this board operated for well over 20 years according to the previous owner. Remember to have the yard elevate the boat high enough to lower the board suffiently for such an examination. I think mine is about 18-20 inches off the ground. ? ? Armando Morell

I have hull 555 1974. Does this means my cb could be
also in this conditions. I have to admit I have not inspected it for a long long time am --- mp_leahy <mp_leahy@...> wrote: I have a used centerboard from a 1975 T27. Used Centerborad
mp_leahy
I have a used centerboard from a 1975 T27. It is rust swollen and split
for about 4 inches around the pennant. My boat yard said it could be repaired for about $750 at $50 per hour (when was the last time you paid the estimated price for skilled trade work?) I bought a new one from Tartan. Shipping the old one may run about $250. I can deliver it free between Maine and Massachusetts at my convenience. Will consider all offers. Even if you don't need a cb, this one would make a unique coffee table that could withstand heavy abuse, beautiful patina, think about it! |
Re: bilge pump
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI used the West Marine pump.? There was another brand (rule) in there previously.? The PO had used garden hose and secured a board in the bottom of the hull that it and the float switch sat on. ? I used a hall effect switch and the WM pump.? I like the cartridge pump.? I don¡¯t think it needs to be secured so it just sits in the crevice under the engine.? The hall effect sensor is epoxied in using a underwater epoxy from Home Depot.? Need to make sure it¡¯s clean first, I used some acetone on a rag to clean the fiberglass and then the epoxy mixes up easily.? The WM pump had to have a plastic tab broken off of it, but it¡¯s not a big deal.? I like this pump because it¡¯s cartridge based and a new one can be installed with little hassle.? It also includes a check valve. ? I replaced the garden hose with ¡°bilge¡± hose.? The garden hose had gotten brittle, it was also narrower and less flexible.? Past that it probably wasn¡¯t awful.? It just made me uncomfortable.? I also used zip ties to secure the hose well up in the transom as far as I could get it.? This creates a nice vacuum breaker to prevent a siphon should Murphy and his damned Law come aboard for any length of time.? You know the saying, If it CAN go wrong, it WILL, in the WORST of moments.? J ? I also used the water proof / underwater epoxy to fix some other things like the icebox drains.? I found it was extremely effective and didn¡¯t mind a little water. |
Long Story
ksmith4312
I consider myself a newbie. My first boat was a Mac 25 (not the
motor sailor)very light and trailerable. I have it at a marina in florida and have been getting to know the other sailors. Lots of fun sailing but still learning. A dry slip so she is easy to launch. Last weekend while on my first solo the forestay didn't sooo I started looking for a mast. Conversation with one of the liveaboards about someday moving up to a more substantial boat perhaps even larger "if I could find a slip" Guess what the Tartan owner who has been doing some work on her was transferred. Would you be interested? The slip is transferrable. I will take a look. Today I fell in love or at least lust with (perhaps) inanimate object. The brass plate says 442. The price is less than a new mast at JSI in St. Petersburg. She will need repowering but for now does come with a kicker motor. One other interesting point my admiral is wheel chair bound but shares my dream. We both were bitten about 20 years ago on a 30 footer on a lake in Oklahoma. Her maiden name is Morris and very Irish. The boats name is Irish Lady. Told you it was a long story. Now Need tiller size? Any ideas on repowering. She had a disel the a4 is long gone. |
Re: bilge pump
tartan27plee
I just posted an article we did on "Bilgepump" where tested 10 pumps.
The Whale Supersub 500 was our winner, and that's the one I ended up installing in my T27. It fits well because it is narrow but yet powerful. I also have a manual Whale Gusher pump installed as well. Check the article in the "Files" section of this site, I will post it right now. |

Re: Hatch
Well Everyone,
I must be living right... At the same time my boat was hurling down the highway, My older brother was about 8 hrs. behind him on a surprise trip down to see me. He and his son were just north of Roanoke, VA when I called them and jokingly (desperately) said, "Hey, keep your eye out for my hatch. It might be in a million pieces but if you can get me the original plaque off the front and salvage enough for me to make some measurments, that would be awsome." Of course we both scoffed and said, "IMPOSSIBLE" since none of us knew when it launched... Low and behold, he called me twenty minutes later and said, "Bro... you're not going to believe this..." He not only got my plaque, he got the whole damn hatch, pad lock still in tact. When she lauched, she apparently hit the edge of the guard rail directly in the center of my hull number plaque and then landed on the shoulder and not in the grass... I have a straight crease in the middle of the plaque that will make an incredible story for rest of her years. I'll post a photo... I'm still in shock. Thanks to those who offered a template and measurements. You all rock!! Good things do happen |
Re: mast stepping
Thanks Bill,
My mast is also very close to the size of the opening. I'm thinking of using Spar Tite in that opening. My buddy just used it on his Pearson 10M and it's a really nice product that is neat, clean and seems to be a great option to taping the mast boot on. I appreciate the input. |
