Hi Dennis,
My baggy mainsail is far more of a liability. You can certainly sail
without it... I think of it as a special boost for extra lift and
standing up (less heel) a bit better. I don't bother with it
most of the time. But I also don't race often.
If you don't mind sharing, how did the grounding go down? Did the
board break free of the pin or did it take the pin with it or is it
too early to know? Any chance of diving to recover it?
