Thanks for the information Caleb and I want to thank everyone for
responding!
We have the boat (hull #580) on the Connecticut River and plan to
cruise on the sound. I'd like to get more power than less just for
the safety factors, however the price really goes up. But, I think I
agree with you that an 18 would probably be better for me than a 14.
I would love to find a good used diesel but it seems for the price
difference it's almost worth it to just get a new engine.
It's interesting that this doesn't seem to be an exact science. It
all depends on who you talk to. I spoke to a Beta rep who said the
14hp is plenty since it has more toque and can handle a larger prop
etc. But, I guess it all depends on what you are trying to achieve.
I'll check out the links and talk to some more people.
Thanks again!

Welcome to the club Drew and congrats!
The Beta engines are supposed to be 'drop in' to replace the A4.
As
far as HP I would get as much HP as you can but you do not need 30
HP
to drive a T27. I find it doubtful that the A4 actually puts out
30 HP
(since mine is over 40 years old this would hardly be a surprise).
I
would think that a new 18HP diesel would be good for the East River
currents and most bad weather.
Check out this Beta dealer that is located across the Dead Sea (aka
the
LI Sound) as they get good ratings from customers:
There are also Beta dealers located on LI in Glen Cove, Stony Brook
and
Sag Harbor; see their dealer page here:
Since I do not know where you are on "the Island" I don't know
which
would be more convenient. I also can't comment on the reputation
of
the dealers on LI.
Your other 'easy' option is to get another A4 from either Moyer
Marine
or buy one on ebay and re-condition it
yourself. I am not sure which option is cheaper but if I had the
money
I guess I would get the Beta as apparently you can re-use the fuel
tank
if it is in good shape as someone said they were originally made of
monel which is good for either fuel type (also a big save on
expenses
for a re-fit).
We used to keep our T27 in the extreme western Sound but now she is
located on the Hudson up at Nyack.
I am writing you from the Huntington area as I still have family on
LI
and I grew up in Sea Cliff. Where are you on LI and which hull #
do
you have?
Congrats on your new boat. They are great old 'classic plastic'
boats.

Subject: [T27Owners] Re-Power
I just purchased a used 75'. The Atomic 4 is out of the boat and
I'm
thinking of re-powering with a new or used diesel.
Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? I'm
trying to
find out what size, horse power, model diesel I would need. A Beta
dealer I spoke to suggested the Beta 14 (BZ482). I think the Atomic
that was there before was something like 30 hp. A 14 hp seems a
little
under powered even with the extra torque and gearing stuff. Any
thoughts?
Anyone have a good used diesel source?
Thanks,
Drew
