Hi Ken,
It looks like if you could actually build the T100D at the 220 weight then by removing the Cauyuna? you would get down to 180 pounds. you could substitute a 80 pound 1/2 VW engine.? adding the 220 pound pilot back in gets you to 500 pounds which is essentially the same maximum weight that Turner proposed, 504 pounds.? I'm a big fan of VW engines having flown behind one for a few years. Would you think that is do-able?? I imagine that the weight limit is to at least some degree based on 20 hp.? I'm not suggesting that it should be built heavier.? I do think that moving to 35 hp would increase the climb rate and decrease the takeoff run.? I wouldn't hold you to this, just looking for an opinion.:-)
thanks very much,

James Fuller

James,

I figured that you meant the T-100D Mariah plans and yes they are available.? You can get them in two sizes, one is a reduced size set (11"x17") and the other is the full size set which is 24" x 36" in size.? We?examined the drawings and found that all but 5 of the pages could be reduced down to 11" x 17" in size allowing for a savings in printing costs. The most crucial drawings such as wing ribs, center section ribs and the?horizontal tail assembly must remain the full 24" x 36" size. The other drawings have the dimensions listed and full size templates can be drawn by the builder. Since this is a reduced size set, more work will be required by the builder.? The cost for the reduced size set is $150.00 plus $10.00 shipping if mailed in the continental US, $15.00 to Alaska and $20.00 to Hawaii, Mexico and Canada.? The full size set is $250.00 and all pages come full size.? The shipping is?$15.00 if mailed in the continental US, $20.00 to Alaska and $28.00 to Hawaii, Mexico and Canada. The shipping cost to most other foriegn countries runs from $44.00 to $55.00.? All funds are USD.? Thanks for asking, let me know if we can get you a set of plans.

James,

About changing the T-100D Mariah, we really need to build this aircraft per plans and that is what we support and really want our builders to do.? The Mariah was designed by Gene Turner, a professional aeronautical engineer, to FAA FAR Part 23 standards and better in most instances.? Mariah flies great as she was designed.? With that said, the T-100D is an ultralight and can be built as an experimental airplane as well.? This allows the builder to make some changes to the design and we don't want to stop the builder from doing what they want to do.? We just want them to be safe and fly safely.? But, unless we can check out the changes and test it beforehand, we cannot make an official statement as to the safety of the aircraft or to the changes that were made.? This would require us to do a full flight test of the design with the changes that were purposed in order for us to know how the aircraft will behave or if it would fly or not.?

I really do like the 1/2 VW engine design a lot.? The little two-cylinder, four-stroke sounds so good, just like a "real" aircraft engine.? I spoke with Gene about using the 1/2 VW and he said not to use this engine in Mariah and I agree with him on this.? The engine is too heavy, most come out to weigh 87 to 90 lbs., some go even higher in weight.? I know that there are special cylinders that you can buy to cut weight and other things that can be done, but you just can't get the weight down enough for Mariah to fly.? I'm afraid that you will have aft CG issues with the 1/2 VW.? The other problem is cooling the engine.? The engine is completely faired into the back end of Mariah and you really need to get good airflow to keep it from getting too hot.? I wish I could say use the 1/2 VW, but I can't.?

We have a builder who opted to use the Kawasaki 340 on his Mariah.? The weight was brought down to around 65lbs and the engine produced right at 35hp.? 35hp in Mariah will make her a screamer, way too fast for Part 103 unless you use a throttle stop.? Unfortunately, we haven't received any flight reports from him yet and cannot say as a fact that this engine works well in Mariah.?? Mariah is truly tuned for 20 to 30 hp. engines, bigger guys may want to opt for a 30 hp. engine or a different design.? Gene used a Cuyuna 430 UL II in a clipped wing, experimental version of Mariah called The Peral and it hit 95 mph and cruised at 90 mph all day long. I will post my Mariah FAQ list and my list of engines that I think will work well with Mariah.? Hope this has helped. ?
