Hello,

My name is Thomas Cox and I live in Chapel Hill, NC. I've been
sailing Sunfish (or equivalent) since I was young. That's about 36
years or so.
Now I'm teaching my twins ( a boy and a girl ) to sail. They're 13.
It's very rewarding teaching them to observe nature. It's also a
wonderful way to teach self-confidence and level-headedness.

For several years, we've just been renting Sunfish. A local county rec
department owns a huge lake and lets folks rent Sunfish for $10.00 an
hour. The plus side for us is we just drive up in our bathing suits
and sail away. No towing, launching, rigging. etc. 100% sail time.
But we are toying with the idea of buying one.

Recently, we saw a Sunfish for sale for $375. I looked up the year
from the transom serial number. It was made in 1974. The daggerboard
and rudder assembly were new, as if never sailed. The sail was a
beautiful multicolor sunrise color, also new. The bottom had no
dings. The only flaw was a halfway completed patch job near the bow,
right under the aluminum trim. The guy said the guy he bought it from
ran into the dock too fast. There's also a trailer for sale for $175.
It's not so hot, but could be spruced up.

Any thought on whether this is a good deal?

Many thanks,
Tom Cox

As long as the boat is not waterlogged, that sounds like a great deal!
I paid $500 for a similar boat with trailer last year. It does have stress cracks in the hull and takes on some water though. The sail was very tattered and will be replaced soon.

My .02,

John C

Hi Tom,

Welcome to the group.

Sounds like you found a worthy fixer-upper for a decent price. Don't forget
tax and license(s).
Just think, that's only about 10 days of rental.

If you are comfortable with doing the repairs and trailer clean-up you will
have yourself a Sunfish. Take a look at the group resources (PHOTOS, FILES,
Message Archives) for information on maintenance. Post all the questions you
like.

Maybe this is a bit premature, but welcome to the Hole-in-the-Water Club.

Tom,
As Wayne said, sounds like a good deal, if you do not mind the
repairs. Check out Wind Line Sails
() How-To section for the bow
repair, how to check a used boat out and other ides. Add up the new
sail, rudder and daggerboard and they made the deal worth it. The
trailer will probably need new bearings and a coat of paint, again
pretty simple jobs. If you are not sure, take it to a trailer shop
and let them check it out. Make sure the trailer supports the boat
properly, damage can occur if not. Other Sources are the Sunfish
Forum () and the Sunfish Class
()home page. In the long run, you will
be happy you got it. Good Luck

Tom,

The correct address for the SF Class home page is

Tom,
Here is a step by step directions for replacing the trailer bearings
(), probably the most
important trailer maintanence item. Hope this helps
