Re: sunfish floatation
(So we¡¯re not concerned with whether the rig comes off and sinks to Davy Jones, we¡¯re concerned with how to keep the mast head or sail peak from going under, so the boat isn¡¯t allowed to turtle

Re: sunfish floatation
Hi, Rick, That¡¯s not the issue. We¡¯re not worrying about losing stuff from failure to tether it. That¡¯s its own separate problem. (And yes it¡¯s a no-brainer but I did lose a rudder that

Re: Questions From The First-Time Sailor
Mark, why the bottom of the mast? Why not the top? Thx, Mike 76274.

Re: Questions From The First-Time Sailor
HI, Clark, Yes, that was me with the dire warning about catamarans. Good to see the steps the Cafish designers have taken. So what I¡¯m seeing at the head of your Catfish sail is a pocket with

Re: Questions From The First-Time Sailor
Great discussion, ranging from the KISS Principle to different buoyancy hacks employed by sailing schools. Seems like a good spot for a pool noodle would be on the gaff, just above the halyard. We saw

Re: Questions From The First-Time Sailor
It was in salt water, mildly brackish. Obviously more buoyant than fresh water. Won¡¯tt get any more tests done today. We are in for several more days of rain. I think I will attach some sections

Re: Questions From The First-Time Sailor
Great Stuff will turn into soup as you describe, but in marine supply stores you can buy a two-component version (liquids that foam up when mixed) that will set up in any depth or thickness ¡ª power

Re: sunfish floatation
Guys, I don't understand this problem. If you capsize the boat and it turns turtle, you should never loose your mast or sail. Hopefully the boat was rigged with a halyard from the sail up thru the

Re: Questions From The First-Time Sailor
I would recommend practicing righting the boat from a complete turtle several times (10x) with a spotter. Noodles can come off and bottles can too. It¡¯s not that hard to right the boat and it relies

Was your test in saltwater or fresh water?? I appreciate you keeping us informed.

Re: Questions From The First-Time Sailor
I did a little test today on the idea of seeing how the mast floats. I taped up a couple of small holes that were in my mast. Mine is 1964 so it has the small thru bolted block at the top. I tied a

Re: Questions From The First-Time Sailor
Things can add up in a flash: tipped over in rough water; wetted clothing under my PFD dragging? me; daggerboard floated out of the slot; delay, followed by turning turtle. I know have a pool noodle

Anyone tried using expanding foam to close the mast?

Re: Questions From The First-Time Sailor
Expanding polyurethane foam (like "great Stuff") for sealing masts or spars is a mistake IMO. ?It's the same sticky stuff anchoring our interior flotation blocks and that's the stuff that soaks up

Re: sunfish floatation
I agree with that. I'd also caution about closed cell vsl open cell foam -- I don't know which the hardware store type is, although in the short time I'd expect a mast to be in the water it might

Re: sunfish floatation
Putting foam inside the mast/spars displaces water on a capsize not air and could creaet a ¡°¡®floating mast/spars¡±. It is worth a try for those afraid they might turtle. I have never turtled

Re: sunfish floatation
I suppose you could always use the 2-part flotation foam sold for adding flotation to boats. Though that's significantly more expensive than the hardware store stuff. [email protected]> wrote:

Thanks Mike for putting some common sense into this thread; filling the spars with foam is not a good idea.

I don't believe adding foam of any kind inside the spars helps, and probably hurts, floatation, as you are displacing air with... less air and weight. unless your spars leak very badly.... adding
