Re: I Bought a Sunfish!

Wayne Carney

Hi Ned,

That sounds like a very reasonable price.

You might consider picking up a copy of the Sunfish Bible. It's a little
history, some good rigging advice, and lots of sailing pointers.

Enjoy your new boat,

Wayne

Thanks to Gail and Wayne for their responses to my inquiry about
buying a used Sunfish. I bought a 1972 with
trailer. She's dry and in good, original, condition. Paid $550 for
her. I will, I suppose, be making inquires about
stuff as time goes by. The FAQ's is certainly a good information
source. I'll look into some books also.
Thanks again!
Ned

Blokart landsailor, trade for Sunfish/other

cotuitbreeze,

I have an extra boat I might want to trade. What sort of boat are you looking for - recreational or racing?

Re: Buying Used Sunfish

Wayne Carney

Hello Ned,

Welcome to Sunfish_Sailor

To give you a reasonable answer to your question a little more information
would be helpful.

Here are some factors involved in price....

Sunfish have been in production for about 50 years -so- a rough estimate of
the age of the boat you are looking at would be good for starters. To
determine the age of a Sunfish refer to the guide in the FILES section of
the group's web page.

If you can take some digital photos and post them it would help with an
evaluation.

I trust you have a feel for assessing the hull and sail condition from your
experience with the ComPac.

A big factor in "Spring Prices" is your location. The East and Gulf coast
seem to be the Sunfish Hot Spots followed closely by the Great Lakes region.
On the other hand, if you live in Wyoming prices are somewhat lower - if you
can find a Sunfish for sale there at all.

A basic trailer in good condition will usually add about $100 to the overall
price tag. Fancy all aluminum models or ones that have been customized with
gear boxes and sail/mast tubes can add $200 or more.

Something easily overlooked on initial inspection is the hull weight. A boat
weighing over 145 lb indicates the inner floatation is probably waterlogged
and will take some effort to dry out.

So, there are some pointers. Let us know what you find and we can build on
the information. By the way, what's the asking price?

Hello. I'm new to this group and have the opportunity to purchase a
used Sunfish. (I currently own a ComPac 19.) It has been stored
outside, up side down, for
several years. The boat looks tobe in good condition, though
I'll take a close look this weekend. It
also has a trailer. What, please, is a reasonable price for this
Sunfish? I realize that's a broad
question.
Thanks! I look forward to keeping up with this group and learning a
lot from you guys.

You might want to explain just what a BloKart is. A link to some
photos or a web site about BloKarts would also be helpful.

Super Sunfish Rigging

Wayne

Hello,

Tom V. has graciously contributed a copy of the Super Sunfish Rigging
Instructions (circa 1983) to the group's library of information.

The pages can be found in the group FILES area.

The format is MS Word.

If you have never seen a Super Sunfish, the rig worth a look at just
to compare.

Thank you Tom,

Wayne

Re: spar transport pictures

Wayne Carney

Hi Charles,

Great photos !!

Your holders look better than mine do. 8^P

I like what you did for a center support.

A word of caution..., be careful using the same strap to tie down both the
boat and the spars.

Wayne

spar transport pictures

Hi Group,

I created a folder in the "Files" area called "spar_transport_pics".
It includes pictures of the spar holders that I made out of PVC
pipes. The idea came from Wayne Carney on this forum over a year ago.
I finally got around to posting my results. Thanks Wayne!

I also included one picture of a modification I made to my trailer
that helps to relieve the pressure on the front roller.

Hello everyone,

Several people have notified me directly that they are receiving virus email
through the group.

This is probably the latest in the virus attacks that fakes or "spoofs" the
sender's name to appear as though it came from an otherwise innocent party.

This group does not permit attachments, which means if a virus were sent to
members through the group email the virus payload would be removed by Yahoo
prior to sending. In the event someone did make an attack all you would
receive would be a harmless message. So, if you have gotten a virus infected
email that appears to have come from the group - I assure you it did not
actually get distributed through here.

Further, because of a rash of annoying attempts to spam this group, NEW
member's posts will now be screened first. This will also eliminate even the
innocuous message portion of any attack attempt. My apologies for any
inconvenience this may cause.

Re: Informal Sunfish Racing in Highland Park, Illinois

Hi Jim,

It's a pleasant thought, sailing Lake Michigan on a balmy summer day,
especially right now.

I for one will make a point to drop by next trip to the region.

Happy 2004 to all of the Sunfish Sailors on this list.
I would like to extend an offer for anyone who wishes to sail their
Fish, in Lake Michigan next summer, to look us up.
We can give you a free launch pass when you visit us. We have 20
active Sunfishers and have a great crash boat. Sailing the waves is
very fun.

Check the www.northshoreyachtclub.com website for detail
We always have a barbeque after racing. Come on the Full moon and
watch the moonrise over the lake.

See you all there.
