Finally got my rudder & tiller
I finally found a nice set from Trey in South Carolina, who I found on the sunfish massage board. Thanks to everyone for their advice, especially Gail who has been more than generous with sharing her sunfish experiences and knowledge.
I've had the Sunfish for nearly 2 months now and haven't been on the water with it yet. I plan to try it out this weekend though! Hey ya Malcolm,
I was thinking of moving mine back a little. I want some leverage on the boom for coming off a run and rounding a mark. Re: Leaving the sunfish in water all season?
Gail Turluck
Oops, forgot to say--NEVER leave your boat in the water "all season."
Too often the anchor line breaks, someone else's boat breaks free, or a zillion other things occur which cause damage to the boat which require repair and getting the water out. If the boat is heavy now, at least get the inspection ports installed (only takes a couple hours), so you can have the boat vent while you're not sailing it (come up with a way to have the open holes still protected from rain but allowing air to flow ...) I have seen far too many destroyed Sunfish because of people leaving them in the water ... Gail M. Turluck <html><body><BR> of water the boat takes on gives me second thoughts. Re: Leaving the sunfish in water all season?

Hi Jud,
Lots of people build simple racks which they leave in the water (poles, pipes, treated lumber for verticals, carpeted 2x4's for horizontals). You can set the verticals down into the bottom by "jetting" them down in with a forceful hose, by screwing them down if you have dock poles with screw bases on the bottom, or build the rack with horizontal "feet" which you will simply set on the bottom. Set the height so it is about one foot above your high water mark. When you bring the boat along side, lift up the transom and slide it onto the back horizontal; keeping a hand on the boat to steady it in place, walk to the bow, lift it up and swing the boat onto the rack. If the two horizontals are about 5-6' apart, you'll have plenty of leverage to get the boat on. ____ | | | | view looking at one piece of rack. Horizontal is a carpeted 2x4 verticals can be whatever you choose. Your option on how to steady rack in water/on floor/in bottom ... Good luck! Gail Gail M. Here's a thought.... Build a low cradle near the waterline that has padded (ramping) rails. Add a simple crank type winch. Pull the boat close and winch it onto the cradle. Cover it when not in use. Wayne -----Original Message----- |
Leaving the sunfish in water all season?
jud1929
Hello all,
We've moved to lake front property and had planned to leave the sunfish in the water for the summer. The posts regarding the amount of water the boat takes on gives me second thoughts. Its an old boat and already heavy. Any thoughts? (Yes,I will be trying dry it some time but not now.) I'd rather not have to pull it up on shore, but if I should does anyone have any ideas of a hoist or something to make it easier. Thanks for your help and happy sailing. Jud |

Some of those asking prices are 3 and 4 times new price????? I don't know about the $28,000 Bass Boat in the sailboat ads (same boat is $6,000 new). Sho gotta catch alotta Bass to make that one worth it. Maybe it's had a warp-drive installed. W- |

I get these dimensions off my '79 Fish: Mast 2.25" Spars 1.50" At this point I can only guess that the wall thickness is around .065" and the material is something like 6061-T6 aircraft aluminum. I think you'll need to consult a mast builder or metals expert to verify strength for the application. Maybe Vanguard would give you the information. Give 'em a try - who knows? If you find out post a message, we'll put it on the specs sheet in the FILES area. Wayne -----Original Message----- |

There was just a discussion about finding replacement sails here in Sunfish_Sailor. Take a look at the message thread at the bottom of this post. (you may need to login first to see all the posts) Here are a couple of places you might look for parts. Post a "Parts Wanted" message on these bulletin boards: Sunfish Class Association Message Board Sailing Texas - (Sailboat Parts Message Board) New Parts - Used Parts - (the only used parts dealer I've heard of) If you discover other regular used parts sources we'd like to hear about them. There are a couple of other people looking as well. Wayne -----Original Message----- |
