Re: Should I DIY a homemade rudder blade?

I suggest making one out of mahogany.? I have 2 15 year old scouts recently make one and it was an enjoyable process.??

Steps:
  1. mill the mahogany to 3/4" thickness, you might be be able to find it at a local lumber store, probably not a big box store
  2. trace the rudder shape onto the mahogany
  3. cut the shape out with a band saw or jigsaw. band saw is better, keeping outside the line
  4. Sand the edge to the line
  5. use a 22.5 x 1 R router bit for the long tapers edges, and a 5/16 R round over bit for the other edges?
  6. sand, sand, sand.? ?We did it to 320 grit
  7. drill the three holes for the rudder cheek, spring pin, and tiller
  8. brush on 2 coats of helmsman varnish on the rudder
  9. assemble rudder
  10. sail
