Gas Tank Hoses
Hi All,
I have removed my gas tank for repairs, and was wondering about all those hose and tanks, and if they are really needed. It seems that all this might not really be needed. Has any one removed all those tanks and hoses, and not had any problems with fuel deliver, or passing the smog check? TIA Mark K. |

Mess with the engineered design and you will end up with more trouble

than you need right now. Be sure the grommets going into the tank are in good shape or you may end up with large gas puddles on the ground when you refill. Ken Wilfy at Van-Again sells a kit to replace all the hoses. Ron Bloomquist and I have both had problems with hoses and grommets after about 130,000 miles. Could be a good time for you to replace all the hoses. The vw braided hoses begin to weep raw gas all the way up to the expansion tanks under the front seats. psheridans@... wrote:

Mark,
Ed is right. It behooves you to get all the hoses in the right place. Besides gas leaking out you can end up with water leaking in, big pain in the neck too. I found that you can get to them (blindly)from the front, in between the spare tire and the tank. If it's going to be out for a bit, order all new grommets and hoses... and take you time to make sure they are installed correctly so you don't have to lay in a puddle at night in the rain by the side of the highway. :-) (like i did!) Good luck. Bill --- In subaruvanagon@..., psheridans@n... wrote: Hi All,all those |

Hi All,As has been pointed out, VW didn't put that stuff in there just because they had a slow day on their hands...the system has three purposes: to allow expansion space for the fuel, to pass fuel vapors back to the charcoal canister, and to spit fuel up into the filler neck to shut off the nozzle before the tank overflows. To accomplish this when the vehicle is tilted (from side to side for the nozzle, and in both axes for the expansion and venting) the expansion/vent system has connections at all four corners of the tank, and the regurgitation system is connected to both sides of the front. All of it is necessary and could not be done away with without completely changing the design of the tank itself, probably reducing its capacity greatly. david David Beierl - dbeierl@... |
